The ultimate guide on how to use Apple Pay

Learn-apple-pay

About a month ago we witnessed the demonstration of Tim Cook paying with Apple Pay, shortly after the function became available for all iPhones that have the NFC chip (iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch). If you want to know more about how to use Apple Pay, where and when, today we bring you the definitive guide to get the most out of it to Apple Pay and thus clear all the doubts that you have in this regard.

Where can I use it?

Apple Pay has become the most widespread in retail stores and restaurants, but we will soon begin to see the function in other payment terminals such as vending machines and parking meters. USA Technologies announced that they have added Apple Pay support to approximately 200.000 of its self-service systems, including coffee machines, laundry equipment, vending machines, parking meters and several other terminals.

Western Union has also started accepting Apple Pay payments, which means being able to pay debts and send money to any Western Union location. In addition, Apple has been maintaining relationships with credit institutions to increase payment possibilities. The result is that around 800.000 customers have linked more than a million cards to Apple Pay.

How do I configure it?

In order to use Apple Pay, it is necessary to have a compatible iDevice as well as the minimum required version of iOS. For now, only iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are compatible, although later the Apple Watch will be included, thanks to which it will open the possibility of using it on iPhones 5S if Apple decides so, since the other key piece of the procedure is the Touch ID, so we hope this option will be extended to all devices with Touch ID linked to your Apple Watch.

It will be necessary to have the iPhone in iOS 8.1 or higher for the Apple Pay function to be activated, in this way we must link the credit or debit card.

  1. Go to Passbook and select the "Link credit card" option, the first one that appears.
  2. We can fill in the data either manually or by taking a photograph of it.
  3. Apple will link the card, you must enter the security code behind the credit card and request permission from your bank that will allow you to use Apple Pay with your device

How do I use it?

Once our purchase is made, the seller will put the card payment terminal in collection mode, to make the payment simply we will bring the device closer to the terminal and the payment system will be launched, it will let us select between the card we want to use and after selecting it from our virtual card holder we will place our finger on the Touch ID and Voilá !, we have paid.

It is not even necessary to remove the iPhone from Stand-by or open any application, bringing it closer to the payment terminal will be enough to start the payment process.

Really thank you for the information but if the last paragraph had been put at the beginning almost better and we did not read an article that was outside the United States it would not give us anything.

By grace or misfortune there are many Spanish speakers in the USA. All the best.

I have iPhone 6 and Passbook and I can't find a way, despite the tutorial, to include a credit card. That is, as Frank has said, the last paragraph should be in the first place to avoid frustrations.

  3.   Inigo said

I totally agree with Frank, after spending several minutes looking in Passbook for the option to add the card, and getting frustrated thinking that there was something wrong (I have reinstalled iOS just in case !!!) it turns out that it is only available for the United States and UK? Why is it not indicated at the beginning of the tutorial? I would say that 95% of the readers are not from the USA or the UK ... it would save us a headache.

You are incredible, really ... No comment.

Luis, if the only three comments on this post mention the same thing, maybe it means something.
The post is very good, there is no doubt about that, and I have added it to my favorites because I am looking forward to using ApplePay. But when you read tutorials or guides, the first thing you do is get down to work and go step by step, without reading everything to the end and starting later.
I'm sorry you didn't like the comment, and I apologize for that.
But if a suggestion, any guide, tutorial or functionality that is not available in Spain is allowed, I think it would be highly recommended to mention it at the beginning. I will continue reading, but I will not try to follow it or configure it. I insist that in my case I have reinstalled iOS, thinking that there was still a failure, because the option mentioned in the guide did not appear.
In any case, this does not detract from the great work you do, really.

Hi Luis: You don't have to be angry. I follow your information every day and I have no problem. If you read well what I have said is that I got down to work right away, without having read the end of your post. Something I should have done. Read to the end.
In any case, if that final paragraph had been at the beginning, it would not be a discredit either. Quite the opposite.
Furthermore, I had already read that this system was only operational in the USA and the UK, but when I saw your tutor, I believed in good faith that it was already operational in Spain because VISA was among the operational ones. So you should not bother with our comments because I think they have not been offensive or anything like that. In the worst case, it has been, for my part, a simple comment. A very warm greeting.

Good morning Iñigo. I am sorry that a misunderstanding has made you waste your time, if the writing of the article is correct or not, the truth is that it is a subjective criterion and as an author I cannot enter evaluations. I know that is no excuse, but perhaps reading the entire article would have saved more than one headache.

In the same way, I take note for future editions and I hope that you do not lose confidence in Actualidad iPad, your criticism (as long as it is constructive) is the only way we have to know if what we do likes the public.

Apple Pay together with Apple Watch are the most fervent news of Apple right now, and from my point of view no reader can be discriminated against, no matter how few, if I were in the USA I would like to have tutorials in my natural language.

Greetings and thanks to Luis for throwing me a cape.

Luis, react like this to a criticism? In no case do we do it in a destructive way, rather the opposite. I think that at the beginning mentioning something like that an option is limited to a specific country will make more readers read what is written. The first thing I will look at is that this article is useful to me. Another example would be to comment when a feature is only valid for an iPhone or iPad model onwards and you prevent an iPhone 4 owner from reading a magnificent article but that does not contribute anything since their ice does not benefit from those characteristics . Taking constructive criticism the wrong way …….

    All the best
    Frank

Sorry that my comment made you feel bad, but after someone writes the article they have written, I think that one of the most complete that you can find online, about a new iOS feature like Apple Pay, see that they ruin everything his work only because under your criteria should have written something before, because it feels like a kick in the stomach.

It is a guide on how to use Apple Pay, not even a "sensational" title like "Set up Apple Pay on your iPhone" or similar has not been used, which could have led to misunderstandings.

What do you want me to tell you? I am surprised by the reaction you have had and I have expressed it that way. It is my opinion. It's not that I take constructive criticism badly, it's that I don't understand it. I may be wrong, that's why I insist, if my comment has made you feel bad, I'm sorry.

Good morning, Luis: There is nothing to forgive or excuse. What's more, I have your article saved in Evernote. What I am not clear about is whether you have read our comments correctly since there are no wrong words in them; There is not nor has there been an intention to offend but to clarify a point that in the opinion of those of us who have written comments (Frank, Inigo and I) was not well placed. This should not produce kicks in the stomach, but possibly some reflection on your part and without serving to get angry because, I repeat, we have not said anything offensive. Keep writing as you do and consider that your contributions are very good and we follow you promptly.
