The wait has been long but I have finally been able to enjoy my iPhone 6 Plus, and after a week with it I think enough time has passed to be able to draw the first conclusions from the Apple phablet. The size of the iPhone 6 Plus can scare more than one, and it is certainly not a phone that fits everyone, but this size in most cases is a plus rather than a drawback. Want share with you the pros and cons that I have found in this time and my conclusions about the biggest smartphone Apple has ever made.
Extraordinary design
I'm not saying it, many people say it, and many of them authorities in the world of technology: iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are the prettiest smartphones Apple has ever designed. It is true that in a matter of taste there is nothing written, and many may not like the curved design of the screen on its edges or the sides of the terminal, or they see with horror the bands that break the aluminum back. The feeling I had when I had it in my hands for the first time is the one I always have when I first premiere iPhone: Apple has surpassed itself again.
The rear bands and the protruding camera was one of the great criticisms of Apple at the time of the presentation of the terminal, or rather, even before when all we had were rumors and leaks. I have to say that neither of the two things are inconvenient for me. The ring around the camera I even like. There is no problem that it sticks out a bit, because I will always carry it with a cover or bumper that avoids contact with the surface. If Apple has had to sacrifice that detail to improve the camera, welcome.
The iPhone 6 Plus is very thin, even thinner than the iPhone 5 and 5s. Aluminum has an excellent touch feeling, and the terminal's appearance is solid. Does it bend? I will not doubt the cases that have appeared on the web, but I can say that this week I have always carried it in my front pocket and I have not had any problems.
It's so slim that even with a cover it still is. Any of the three colors I likedBut the front look of the space gray model was impressive to me, and that's what I based my choice on. The new volume buttons, slightly sunken on the side and elongated instead of round as in the previous models, are much more adapted to the new profile of the iPhone 6 Plus, and their touch when pressed is even better than those of my iPhone 5.
Oversized display
The size and quality of the screen are beyond question. The new 5,5-inch Retina HD display with 1920 × 1080 resolution is extraordinary. This new size is undoubtedly a huge advantage over previous 4-inch models, and even the current 6-inch iPhone 4,7. Applications optimized for this new screen are gradually appearing in the App Store, and being able to view large photos on Twitter, movies at FullHD resolution or surf the internet is much more pleasant than in other models.
You just have to use Safari to be able to tell the difference. Much more content on a single screen, larger photos, and a quality that allows you to read the text of any website comfortably, even using desktop versions.
Sure, then there's the other part of the story: the not-yet-optimized apps are horrible on this new iPhone 6 Plus. The zoom that is done to fill the entire screen and that huge keyboard that appears that takes up half the available space make your eyes hurt every time you open a non-adapted application. Those who have an iPhone 6 Plus, or even an iPhone 6, and use WhatsApp will know what I'm talking about. Luckily this will be something that will be solved in a short time and the final result of these applications will be more than satisfactory in the visual aspect, as you can see in the image on these lines with WhatsApp Beta already adapted to the iPhone 6 Plus screen.
Comfort of use
The iPhone 6 Plus is very large, but not uncomfortable. Although one thing has to be clear for anyone who plans to purchase it: it cannot be used with one hand, nor by double tapping on the home button to make the screen "go down". It's impossible to write with one hand unless you have extra-large hands, like the iPhone. It is also risky, because you must place the terminal in a position that poses a great risk of falling due to any carelessness.
But if for you it is not something fundamental to be able to use it with a single hand, surely this inconvenience is sufficiently compensated with the advantages of being able to enjoy a screen of this size. A couple of years ago I would never have imagined with a smartphone of this size, after a week what I cannot imagine is with a smaller one. The user experience is sensational, yes, with the optimized applications. Being able to see more information and also on a higher quality screen is something you will not want to give up once you have tried it.
Does it fit in pants? In my jeans of course they fit. They are neither very narrow nor very wide, they are normal jeans (the ones in the photo are Levis 511, to be precise) and the iPhone does not protrude (in the photo it comes out intentionally). You can walk without the slightest problem. Of course, you can't sit comfortably with it, at least with jeans, much less drive, but I've never done that with any of my mobiles. It is large but thin, and that is appreciated to wear it on the pants.
Exceptional camera
It was one of the reasons why I opted for the iPhone 6 Plus, since its camera is better than that of the iPhone 6 because it includes an optical stabilizer, which a priori should give better quality to photos taken in low light. indeed, it does not disappoint me. I would like to be able to compare the photos with an iPhone 6 but I don't have any so I have to settle for what my iPhone 6 Plus does. The new iOS 8 options that also allow varying the exposure give a lot of play, and the photos obtained with the camera in low light are more than decent, much better than my previous iPhone 5. Obviously you can never replace a SLR camera, I do not think that is the intention of Apple.
As for the video camera, I have not noticed much improvement, since the videos that my iPhone 5 recorded were already quite good. Yes indeed, when there is little light the quality is far from that of the photos, you can tell that the light is not enough and that is when you notice that it is not a "normal" video camera. Even so, for 99% of the situations your iPhone 6 Plus is not going to disappoint you.
Dream battery
I leave for last the best of its characteristics, at least for me: its battery. My iPhone goes all day with me, I have never been to go around activating and deactivating WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G / 4G, etc. I want my iPhone to be at my service, not the other way around, and that meant charging it every day, at least 2 times, once at noon and once at night. Yes, I use it a lot: Twitter, RSS, calls, WhatsApp, Telegram, Safari, Mail, games, videos, streaming, applications for work ... Well, my iPhone 6 Plus has not left me down for a single day. From 7 in the morning that I disconnect it from the charging base until I go to sleep, it holds without fail. Some days more left over, others something more fair, but always on. This was something I dreamed of, and I have succeeded.
Conclusion: exceptional, although not for everyone
I would never have imagined using such a large smartphone, quite the opposite. Phablets seemed awkward and exaggerated to me. After a week my feelings with the iPhone 6 Plus could not be better. Is it suitable for all the public? Of course not. There will be many who will be horrified by a terminal of that size, even the iPhone 6 may seem too big. It is true that some comfort is lost in the use of the device, but it is gained in many other aspectsThe most prominent being the screen (obviously), the camera and the battery.
