Tip: Turn on character counting

Character count

There are things that are difficult to understand. One of them is why the character count of the Messages app iOS is disabled by default. We must not forget that iMessage is not only a modern messaging application, but we also use it to send SMS. This means that if we start writing without knowing when to stop, instead of sending an SMS we can send two or three. How to avoid this?

Well, the solution is simple, but I think it would be best if we did not have to do it manually. Is about enable character count in Messages, so we will know when to stop or when to start trimming words by typing "ksas kmo sta".

How to turn on character count on iPhone

Enable character count

  1. Let's go to Settings.
  2. We played on Messages
  3. We scroll down and activate "Character Count".

And that's it. When we start writing we won't see anything, but from the second line we will see the characters that we have left to send a message. The number to the right indicates how many characters an individual message consists of. In the enlarged image at the beginning of this article you can see that on the right there are only 70 characters available, but that is because I have accidentally chosen to send it to the mail instead of the phone number, so it is counting me as an MMS message .

Like everything in life, this count could improve. I think I remember that when I had my Nokia 3650, in addition to the character count, I would see the number of how many messages I was going to send. With Apple's count we have to calculate it ourselves and it would not be bad if the number of SMS that we will be charged if we send it would also appear. But hey, at least we have the active count.

… And in another 3 years it might work when you put more than one recipient.

that print screen of which iphone is it? I have the 3gs in ios 4.0 with jailbreak and I get additional options, such as Preview, I find it very useful to disable it so that anyone does not see the content of the sms on the screen

I activated it and it doesn't work, after a respring either. And the SMS helper, in the 4 does not work.

Well, at least it allows you to check how instead of sending ONE MESSAGE you ended up sending TWO OR THREE because of the accents. now it's easy, you include an accent and the maximum character counter goes from 160 to just 70 !!!!

The accent thing goes wrong. He counts them as common characters to me (they only consume one unit) Also when you go over 160 it doesn't tell you SMS belts go, just keep adding characters and you cut the division. Enhanced SMS…. Yes but half

Exactly, it is a silly solution, I think it cost nothing to place an additional character to know how many sms you have, the idea is to make things easier for you, not to add a 50% solution so that you have to divide your and put the other 50%, it is like your cell phone the option of seeing the number that calls you but does not relate it to your contact list and you have to find who corresponds that number ... something merely silly, I do not know who they put to think of solutions for the user.

@Fede, if it works, what happens is that the counter only appears when you have written two lines or more, because it appears above the Send button.

It is true that when you send an SMS to more than one recipient, the counter does not appear. And the thing about the accents is also true, it happens to me too.
