Tips to update your device to iOS 5 (Clean Restore)

Only one day left until the official arrival of iOS 5Many of us have been able to try it already thanks to the betas and especially to the Golden Master version.

In conversations with blog readers I have detected battery consumption problems mainly, when in my case the battery lasts me practically twice as long as with iOS 4.3.3.

The main reason is that these problem users have restored and then used their backupIn other words, they have configured their iPhone as "blablabla iPhone ..." loading unnecessary, corrupted or jailbroken files on the iPhone if they had one.

The solution is very simple and you can read it after the jump:

You have to do a clean restore, that is, "set as new iPhone."

This has its pros and cons. The benefits are obvious, we will not drag any problem or anything incompatible or unnecessary to the new system. For me this reason is more than enough to do it.

The bad thing about configuring your iPhone as if it were new, the loss of some data, below we will tell you which ones will be saved and which ones will not, although there is always an option to save them all that we are telling you:

Call history: is lost.

Agenda: is saved, it's in iTunes (as long as you sync your iPhone before updating).

SMS: are lost, you can save them as follows (you need to jailbreak):

We access the iPhone by SSH using Cyberduck on Mac or WinSCP on Windows.
Let's go to the path var / Mobile / Library / SMS
We save the SMS.db file on the computer.

Then you can put it back on the iPhone (with jailbreak).

Emails: The emails are associated with your accounts, if you have them associated with iTunes they will be again when you restore, if not as soon as you re-enter your email accounts you will have everything as at the beginning.

Notes: is saved, it's in iTunes (as long as you sync your iPhone before updating).

Photos: The photos on the roll will not return to it if you restore as a new iPhone, it is recommended to extract them with iPhoto if you have a Mac or with Windows Explorer itself if you have a PC.

What I do is make a folder / album called "Reel iOS 4" and sync it later, so I still have the photos from my iPhone on the iPhone itself.

Applications: are saved, it's in iTunes (as long as you sync your iPhone before updating).

Saved games and application data: They are lost, but you can save them if you have jailbreak:

You can get them out by hand via SSH, a bit annoying.

You can use a Cydia app like DataDeposit which will upload the data of the applications you want to Dropbox.

There are others like AppLinks also in Cydia.

After the restoration we will have to re-enter the games by SSH.

Settings: They are lost, you will have to reconfigure your automatic lock, your alarms, etc.

Cydia: Everything you have jailbroken will be lost. You can use applications like PKGbackup or APT backup to save everything you have installed and reinstall it later, but you will be doing the same, importing incompatibilities.

My advice is that you write down what you have installed on a piece of paper and then install again one by one to see which one you need and which one you don't and to see if any causes any incompatibility.

NOTE: some of the solutions that I propose to not lose anything require jailbreak both to extract data and to re-enter it, my advice is to wait until there is jailbreak for iOS 5 before updating.

Well, I do not know, I have done a restoration "from zero" to iOS 5 without putting a backup copy and the battery lasts the same or even a little less than with 4.3.X ... I doubt that the problem is to put or not put the copy of security…

  2.   Álvaro said

Thanks man, very helpful, especially about saving the messages and the games.
    A greeting.

Gnzl, what do you say that the battery lasts twice as long ... Is that real or is it gone?
It seems very complicated to me that it lasts half for some and twice as long for you. The difference seems to me abysmal so that the only difference is restored as a new iPhone. And good that it lasts the same as with ios 4 it can be, but that it lasts much longer with ios5 ... I wish it were true Gnzl.

  4.   gnzl said

It lasts twice as long with iOS 4 with a ton of tweaks installed and a full year without restoring.
It lasts me exactly two days.
    .
I can tell vincent that I do this with 4 years of experience and hundreds of restorations.
    .
Each one is free to restore or update, this is simply my advice.

    1.    Dacon said

Say, that for my part, and like Gnzl, the battery is lasting twice as well (which I was very pleasantly surprised). As long as you do a clean install like "new iphone"….

The only bad thing is that I have lost the jailbreak, so I'll wait for the untethered version to be released ...

    2.    Manuel said

Well, I think that is a placebo effect, it is impossible that with iCloud (which is connected to the internet all day) and an OS that consumes more resources than the previous one, the battery lasts one more day ...

It lasts only 12 hours for me, I take it out at 7am and at 7pm it is already dead with iOS 5.0 GM

  5.   Defit said

And if someone is in doubt, they can always update, check current battery life and in case Gnzl (+) choose the restore option, right?

    1.    gnzl said

If you have had a jailbreak I do not recommend it, from iOS 4.3.2 to 4.3.3 yes, but from iOS 4 to iOS 5 no.

  6.   Pau (FR) said

A question nothing more. I was considering restoring from scratch to iOS 5, and I have a question to solve those problems with lost data.
If I first update to iOS 5, I make a backup with iCloud, and then I restore as a new iPhone, won't we recover the sms and other things like that without the need for jailbreak?

    1.    gnzl said

iCloud does not save Pau sms.
      .
and the saved games will only save those of the apps compatible with iCloud (which are not many)

      1.    hubb3r said

        iCloud backs up:

Music, apps and books that you have bought
Photos and videos of the Reel
        Device Settings
        Application data
        Home screen and app organization
Messages (iMessage, SMS and MMS) ———-> I would say that it does copy the SMS ...
        tones

        1.    gnzl said

In settings I do not get the option, but I have not tried it, if you copy them, updating and then restoring would be a good option.

            1.    Pau (FR) said

Thanks!! I will try to see what is not synchronizing ... If not, I suppose I can always go back to restore and recover the last backup ...

  7.   Paul said

A Gnzl doubt and so I anticipate tomorrow: those of us who have the GM of iOS 5 installed when the official version comes out, what will happen…. Do we stay as is? And if we update, what would it be like to have the GM?
    Thank you!!

  8.   FranCab said

I have the iOS5 GM and it is doing better than the betas regarding the battery. I would wait for the finale or for Apple to fix it. Telling the club to do so much work so that it finally loses all its data or having to do JB seems crazy and absurd to me. Let's think that it is not a failure that could not be solved (in the case that it is a failure, it lasts for me as normal) as it has happened with other iOS.

    1.    gnzl said

Wow, you don't even know that the GM and the final are the same 95% of the time and you venture to say that what I say is absurd?
      .
There is no problem, the battery lasts two days.
      .
If someone does not last a day, it is most likely that the problem is with their iPhone, and that they have an iPhone different from another? The backup.
      .
By not putting it in, all the data is not lost as you say, only some that we have also explained how to recover.
      .
We do not force anyone, the post is called "TIPS for updating to iOS 5".

How long does your battery last twice with iOS5GM? You do not believe it or you ... HAHAHAHA With iOS5GM they have managed to solve the excessive battery consumption of previous betas, and it is true that perhaps it lasts a little longer than with iOS 4.3.3, but twice as long !!! No way !!!

Hi gnzl thanks for the tip. The history of whatsapp, another thing that is lost ... right?

  12.   mqnrium said

I've been weighing it up, and I'm going to do it tomorrow as you say; I never would have thought about the unnecessary files.
But what Gnzl says escapes me:

"Agenda: saved, it's in iTunes (as long as you sync your iPhone before updating it)."

Not losing it, as I imagine it to you, is the most important thing for me. How would it be done?
How from a "virgin" iPhone do you get the agenda from iTunes again?

    Thanks people!!!

  13.   Brian said

Gnzl another who thanks you! Let's see how I finally do it for the issue of the loss of games and other things of the applications…. What a rage about the jailbreak and the files! If I go through 4.3.5 first, won't a cleaning be done? Haha greetings and a very good post!

If I do the copy with iCloud today, install the iOS and restore tomorrow the copy of iCloud today, would it give me the same problems? Or is it better to start tomorrow from scratch?

    1.    gnzl said

The iCloud copy has no problems, the problem is the computer backup, which has jailbreak files and settings that correspond to another system.

Some are heavy for commenting and others for criticizing comments.

I do not believe that the iPhone battery lasts twice as long (unless you have it on the bedside, without notes and without data connections). But starting from the fact that it lasted twice as long ... it would not be (at least not only) for having restored as a new iPhone, but for the better management that 5.0 makes of resources.

I am very amused by the importance that Gnzl gives itself, arguing its extensive experience in the sector, when it is still a user like any of us. Another thing is that a hacker is created by using terms like "userland", "tethered", "bootrom" and so on.

PS: let's not forget the great and reputable editors it has, little kids who think this is a blog instead of a serious page.

And by the way, when they don't like a comment they delete it, whether it is argued or not. This is how their hair shines.

    1.    gnzl said

Look Jesus, at no time have I said that I am a hacker, I have said that I give advice due to my experience, that I have it, whether you like it or not, because it is many years.

On the other hand, insults are forbidden, and "little boy" is an insult, especially if you insult a person who is surely older than you, who has a superior career, and a very good job; and that he does this as a hobby.
      .
I do not delete the comment, which is obvious that you lack respect, to be able to answer you, but do not doubt that I will do it if you insult again.

      1.    Jesus said

In the second meaning of the word child, according to the RAE, we can see that it means: "Said of a young man: No experience." As far as I'm concerned it's not an insult, I still won't use it from now on.

He may be older than me, he may not, and in fact I am happy for his career and for his good work… but I am not judging his professional career, but his validity as an editor for a technology news page. I consider that as a daily reader of this website I have the right to do so.

I hope that this answer is within the thresholds of respect that you consider reasonable.

Gnzl, you are a machine, do not take the comments the wrong way, people are a little nervous with the super brand new IOS 5, and so many changes arrive that create insecurity in the brotherhood. Look, with the ios 5 gm I also do not notice an improvement with the battery consumption, it lasts a maximum of one day and with little difficulty, and I have it restored to 0.
It is true that there are iPhones that last 2 days and others one, because luckily or unfortunately I have 5 .. I get the feeling that the problem is another, could it be that these batteries are defective? Or the loads that are carried out are not correct ,,,

Gnzl I think you may be right but this comment in the paragraph is totally unnecessary "that he has a superior career, and a very good job" (referring to your person). It is not relevant nor do you have more or less reason for the subject of your studies. What's more, a large number of hackers or important people in the sector do not have your studies anywhere, and yet they are real machines.

Thank you Gnzl for your answer. Well, if so, it's a bummer, because I don't want to jailbreak ios5 at the moment. We don't even talk about whatsapp then right? There is no way to backup whatsapp conversations to restore them later? Because it does give the option of sending you the histories by email but then it cannot be restored ...
    Greetings.

A question for Gnzl, those of us who have the IOS 5 GM installed, tomorrow when the IOS 5 is officially released, will we update automatically or will we have to do something? Thanks in advance, you are a great help.

  30.   Victor said

Gnzl if you restore from a copy of icloud is the same as from itunes, or at least I understand that. Note that when you choose the option to save a copy in icloud the copy of itunes is ignored, they cannot go together, so which makes me think that they both work the same way.

    regards

  31.   vincentpastor said

so gnzl, is it worth waiting for the jail to come out for ios5 right? Since you can keep everything except the applications you have cydia downloads like iblacklist, celeste, etc. right? Or for these applications that I have paid for when the jail is over, I can download them again, but this time for free?

    1.    gnzl said

Yes, vicente. you can download them again without problem

      1.    vincent pastor said

but if I actualize I don't have them until there isn't a jail unthetered, right? and I put them down again, thanks you are a crack

The Gnzl truth is that I find this type of article great, I have read everything that has been published and I am impressed with some characters ... I am not very fond of blogging, although I do read many, and I never quite understand what that certain people will find it difficult to speak with respect… Do they really speak like that on the street or with their friends / families? Anyway…

Anyway, I have not had the same luck as you with the battery life ... On Monday I updated to iOS5 GM and I perceive exactly the same duration (neither had I jailbreak nor do I have it now). What I have found is that I could only upgrade to iOS5 from a Mac, since there is no version of iTunes compatible with iOS5 for Windows, when my iPhone backup had it on Windows. So at the moment I have not been able to restore my previous backup ... At least I have not been able to take my iTunes backup from Windows to Mac (I do not know if it is possible and I have not found a solution).

Anyway, now I am curious about what will happen tomorrow after the final version of iOS5 and iTunes 10.5 are released… Should I restore again with the new firmware? Will it require some kind of restoration? Tomorrow we will leave doubts ...

    A greeting!

But then it doesn't hit "restore backup", right? If you give the iPhone like new, it already gives you the contacts directly?

  36.   St John Michael said

It may not make sense but it is what I intend to do! I'm going to synchronize and delete the iPhone 4, from iPhone settings I have it without jailbraek so it will be a few seconds! I will download iOS 5 from iTunes, I connect iPhone, I update and configure the iPhone again as new then I delete again in iPhone settings and I will configure it with my backup copy

In theory the new iOS will be installed purely on the iPhone and then it should not be corrupted with the backup

    1.    gnzl said

It is the backup that can corrupt, not when you put it. If you put your backup, sooner or later, you may have problems, so we recommend not doing it.
You can always try putting it and if it does not go well you follow our tutorial.

I think from my humble opinion, that maybe it is to update with restoration of the old ios 4xx, to 5, and once the iclound theme is configured, with the compatible applications, restore the terminal as new and configure the iclound account, and thus in this way put only what interests us again.
Also, we can make a backup copy before the process, and leave the terminal clean for a few days to see the new features without interference, so we will know if some applications that we had so far are no longer necessary.
    This is my humble opinion.
Greetings to all, and we do not get upset about things that are not necessary, congratulations for the post and the advice, and for the blog in general.

One question, that that the saved games and the data of the apps are deleted.

Would my Game Center records be erased? That is, for example, in Angry Birds or Fragger, would I have to pass all the levels again?

This is how I understood it and it seems like a big shit to me.

    1.    gnzl said

Game center no, but if you don't save them the passed screens would be lost.
If you restore your backup you don't lose anything, although your battery may last less.

My question is how I think I remember someone above has asked. If I update to io5, with my backup (I have it with jail), we upload the copy to icloud and then configure it as a new iphone.
Is all the app data and game recordings uploaded to iCloud or do they have to be enabled for each app / game?

Thank you very much 1Greeting !!!

If you want to keep your iPhone 4 with iOS 4 as close as possible when updating to iOS 5. The first thing is to make a backup on your pc or Mac. Back up what you can by ssh or ifunbox. Then only if there is already wireless jailbreak for iOS 5. Upgrade to iOS 5. Restore the backup. Backup to iCloud. Restore iOS and set up as new iPhone. Restore the iCloud backup. Make the jailbreak enter the data that you backed up by ssh or ifunbox. You should already have an iPhone with iOS 5 as close to when you had it with iOS 4.

  43.   Alfonso said

The issue of the backup that Gonzalo says is simply for a reason (apart from the battery issue that certainly some may do better and others not) ... If you notice when the iOS is updated (and I speak within the same version, that is, from for example 4.2.1 to 4.3.3), many of the Cydia applications you have do not work, or work badly, in that new version and have to be updated. Well, if you recover a backup in which there is data from that app incompatible with that new version of iOS, you are already dragging bugs and errors that part of the battery life can affect other things.
    .
I want to say that having your iPhone totally clean is not recommended, but almost mandatory for what may happen; And if we no longer speak within the same version of iOS, but a completely new one such as iOS 5, much more.
    .
By the way Gonzalo, when the criticism already goes to the personal you should delete the post. And in this thread you have been criticized personally. I certainly do not tolerate that. All the best.

  44.   Manuel555 said

Another way is to use PKGbackup for everything, since it lets you save both the games and data of applications and Apple's own applications, that is, the calendar, camera photos, contacts, telephone, sms, etc ... And also as Gnzl says everything related to Cydia. And the good thing is that you can upload everything to dropbox, and then retrieve it from there. I don't know if it will work with version 5, but with version 4 it is how I used to do it.

    1.    Alfonso said

The problem with PKGBackup is that if you also restore the Cydia, in the end it is the same as if you restored the backup. I simply, and as Gonzalo says, what I do is point (which I have already done since my first restoration), the Cydia apps that I use, I make sure that they are compatible with the new iOS, and then I return them to install from scratch. If one is not, I hope it is, or simply, if it is an essential app for me, I will not upload from iOS until it is.

      1.    vincentpastor said

But if there is still no jailbreak for ios 5, how do you put cydia and its apps again?

        1.    Alfonso said

For the iPhone there is, although at the moment it is tethered. However, it is "assumed" that the hackers already have the untethred prepared for when the final version (tomorrow) of iOS 5 comes out. The truth is, I don't know if they will wait for the release of 4S to publish them or not. .
          .
Anyway, if there were no jail for iOS 5, you could not use the PKGBackup either because it is a Cydia app and by the nose you have to have the jail.

  45.   ne said

Hello!! I have a question. I already have iOS5 and a backup in iCloud (contacts, calendar…). If I choose to restore as a new iPhone… how can I later transfer my data? Because if I put it from iCloud ... in the end I would be putting everything back as a backup ... I don't know if I explain myself, xD

    1.    gnzl said

It is not the same, iCloud is selective; iTunes gets you all, good or bad.

    2.    Alfonso said

Let's see, if you only and exclusively talk about data such as Agenda, calendars, etc, etc, it would not matter exactly the same. The real problem with restoring the backup is ONLY for the Cydia apps. That is, a person who has not even jailed it could perfectly recover his backup when uploading from iOS without any fear.
      .
The problem is given because if you have an iPhone with jail and Cydia app's installed, when making a backup copy in iTunes, that copy also includes data from the Cydia app's that modify system files.

      1.    ballantin said

So if it's like you say, it's a problem that only affects people with Jail, but in the article it seems to be a problem that affects everyone.
For my part I will update as always, through iTunes, since I have never made it JB

        1.    gnzl said

Yes, I think it only affects jailbroken people, I can't confirm it because I've never had an iPhone without jailbreak.

Well, what I'm going to do is put iOS 5, put the backup made with iOS 4.3.3 (the one I have right now), that iCloud makes its copy in the cloud of contacts, saved games and others (apparently YES He does it as they already commented in another post http://www.apple.com/es/icloud/features/apps-books-backup.html) iCloud backs up:

Music, apps and books that you have bought
Photos and videos of the Reel
      Device Settings
      Application data
      Home screen and app organization
      Messages (iMessage, SMS and MMS)
      tones

And once the copy is made in iCloud, put the iOS 5 CLEAN again and free of "trash" (in iCloud, "parts altered" of the system by the Jail are not saved, only data from apps such as notes, games, etc. , etc) and then "restore" only from iCLOUD.

I do not know if I have expressed myself clearly xD.

      1.    Alfonso said

If iCloud really works like that, I honestly don't know, it would certainly be a perfect solution, in my opinion. Your Gonzalo, what do you think about LuixmaN's contribution?

What will happen to the itunes to which we have the beta? Can we update it directly from the soft update of the mac or do we have to download it and install it?

    Good afternoon!
Gnzl, first of all thank you very much for the advice that you offer us daily, and especially these now. Because if it were not for these tips, surely half of us would have updated without contemplation haha.
Right now, the only thing that worries me the most is losing the games of some of the games and the messaging data.
I will try what was said about making the copy to iCloud, but ... sorry for my ignorance, but if iCloud comes out together with the iOS 5 update, we will have to wait until tomorrow to synchronize, or is there an app that can be synchronized in the cloud and is "compatible" with iCloud?
Hahaha, I repeat, sorry for my ignoranceaa 😛

Thank you very much in advance!

I have not always had a jailbreak, but if you are right one causes problems, when I go from 3.x to 4.0 with the 3gs the proximity sensor when calling off the screen and not turning it on again, had to lock the mobile, and then it worked. When I bought the iPhone 4, and I gave it a copy restore, that problem happened to the new mobile, what I did to fix it was to restore all the settings and it was solved, could this measure work? oq you recommend me, xq where this app happens to me is with the ipad. Every time I restore it and give it a backup copy of the apps I had but it doesn't order them, then I have to do it manually (tedious), and I don't know why. what do you advise me?

Forgive my clumsiness, but there is one fundamental thing that I do not understand. Many of the options put that it is saved in iTunes and that the iphone has to be synchronized before restoring. But once we have restored the iphone to iOS5 if we select to configure new iphone. How do we load this data saved in iTunes?

  60.   alvarete said

Hello everyone, I have the same question as Andrés, what do we who install the IOS5 GM have to do? Is it necessary to downgrade (I hope not….)? And do you know from what time the official version can be installed?

    Thank you all !!

  61.   NecroTraxx said

Yay, many of us are already excited about the arrival of iOS5, the truth is, I don't know what time it will be released, but I already want to have it on my iPad 2 and iPhone 4 to see how it goes.
The recommendations seem great to me, I will definitely take them into account, the truth, the most important thing that I need to save from my iPhone, are the contacts and nothing else, the photos do not matter to me, and then the Jailbreak, can wait, until now have a safe Unthethered version, and that I only use Jailbreaks for Tweaks and Utilities like Open Notifier and things like that

If you look at iTunes, you will see that in the information tab YOU CHOOSE WHAT is synchronized and WHERE (Outlook, Agenda, etc.) That is, the contacts are not in iTunes, they are in a program on your system (as I have already said, it can be Outlook , Windows Contacts, etc.)
Everything that is synchronized there with the computer is not lost EVEN IF YOU BUY A MOBILE FROM ANOTHER BRAND (as long as in the synchronization program you choose where you have the contacts / notes / etc.)

  66.   psycho_pata said

Well, I have tried to restore from iCloud and when I connect for the first time it tells me that there is no backup

I summarize: iTunes backup, 5GM update, restore from iTunes and iCloud sync… start over… complete data erasure… clean iphone

It gives me the option to restore icloud, itunes, or clean install.
    - If I say icloud it tells me that there is no copy
    - I say clean installation and coming to iCloud I see that I still have the data from yesterday
-¿? ¿? ¿? It does not give me the option to restore them from the iphone
    - If I connect in itunes it tells me to enable the new name
    - I'm afraid of crushing the above (I don't know whether to change my name or use the same one)

    Solution:
For now, erase iPhone data and restore with iTunes from scratch

Hello Gnzl, last year (I think) I installed the jailbreak on my iPhone 3Gs, but after a few months I decided to restore the computer with iTunes. I have downloaded all the updates, I leave the latter that must enter today (12/10/2011), in my case, it is possible that my computer keeps unnecessary, corrupt files or files from the jailbreak that I perform at some point. Also, I would appreciate it if you could tell me how I make sure that these files are also deleted from the order. Thank you in advance for your help 🙂

Please, if someone tries this so as not to lose the recorded games of the games, comment if it has worked for them!
I have thought to do this with icloud:
1st Update from 4.XX to ios 5 loading my backup
2º Upload everything to icloud (here I would keep my copies of games)
    3º Restore as new iphone
4th Load a copy of iCloud

By the way I ask all this because I understand that it is highly recommended to do this if you have had a jailbreak to avoid dragging errors to ios 5
Thanks guys! shortly download ios5 !!!!

I do not have jailbreak so in principle it should not have corrupt files at least for that reason.

Okay. Well, the case is the following:
Yesterday I started updating my iPhone with Jailbreak 4.3.3. When trying to restore, iTunes told me that it could not connect with apple and, well, I thought that using the ipsw of the 4.3.3 that I had from the Jailbreak and Tinyumbrella with the saved shsh I could do something.
Well, after trying, I get an unknown error 1 when there is more than a third of the software loading bar left. I realized that, I don't know why, the shsh that I thought I had saved was not there and my iPhone has stayed in recovery mode and there is no way to get it out of there.
Today I realized that I have a shsh of version 4.0.1 and I hope that it is worth to be able to get the phone out of this infinite hell that is killing me (you have to see what this phone does).
        Anyway, what do you recommend?
(This is a summary of what happened this morning).

        All the best

What I have done has been to update to ios 5, install the applications I need, make a backup in icloud and then from the iphone restore and restore the icloud backup, since in the icloud backup only the data of the installed applications. I think it is the best option not to lose photos, etc.

When I say install the applications that I need, I mean that I restore the backup of ios 4.3.5 and install the applications that I need, for example emoji we no longer need it, since it comes by default.
