The TomTom road navigation app for iOS has been updated and has introduced us to its new companion: TomTom Go Mobile. But let's go by parts: the standard application has been updated to version 1.22.2, but this time they do not include the usual in the description, that the maps are changing and that they update it to add the most recent changes to the roads. Most likely they do include these changes, but they took the opportunity to invite us to use TomTom Go Mobile.
What is TomTom Go Mobile? Well I would say that it is a service of GPS navigation under subscription. The application can be downloaded for free and, if I remember correctly (it doesn't work for me anymore), it can be used for 75km per month totally free. After that mileage, the application will stop working and will invite us to subscribe to continue enjoying TomTom Go Mobile. But the possibility of being able to do a few kilometers without paying is not its only attraction.

TomTom will offer a free 3-year subscription TomTom Go Mobile to users who have purchased one of its applications. They assure that the normal application will continue to work, but I am afraid it will stop receiving support sooner or later. To try to compensate for the extra price that would result from paying € 45 for a 3-year license or € 20 for 1 year, the application has attractive features such as the following:
- New Design. I have never complained about the TomTom image, but as soon as I opened TomTom Go Mobile I realized that it was a bit sloppy. The new app is much more visually appealing and looks better on the iPhone.
- Maps of more than 100 countries. At the moment, TomTom applications are not cheap, that must be said, and the worst thing is that we can pay € 70 (before they were € 100) just for the maps of Europe. With TomTom Go Mobile we will have access to all TomTom maps.
- Traffic information and speed cameras. The normal app also offers traffic information if we pay, but not if we don't. The new app has it all included.
- 3D Maps. To be honest, it is not that it is very useful, since the important thing is the roads, streets and paths, but it is appreciated to be able to see some buildings in 3D.
If we have purchased a TomTom application but do not have an account, when updating it will invite us to download TomTom Go Mobile, it will ask us to create one and link the device to its service. This means that, logically, we will not be able to subscribe once and use it on any device. It is worth trying, since it is a complete service for 3 years and it will also help us to know if we want to pay for it. In my case, I don't think I will renew after three years, but who knows?
