Tutorial: Activate 720p video recording on an iPhone 3GS

It seems that the Cortex ARM processor used by the iPhone 3GS is perfectly capable of encoding video at a resolution very similar to 720p (it is not the same due to the aspect ratio) so below you have a small tutorial that will help you activate the HD video recording on your iPhone 3GS.

Requirements:

  • Tested on iOS 4.1
  • Have the iPhone 3GS with Jailbreak.
  • Have OpenSSH installed.
  • Know the IP address of the iPhone to be able to access its file system using Cyberduck (Mac) or WinSCP (Windows)
  • Have made a backup of the system.

Tutorial:

  1. Download and unzip the following * .zip file.
  2. Copy the file N88AP.plist in the following path:
  3. /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/

  4. Copy the three remaining files (CameraRoollValidador.plist, MediaValidator.plist and AVCapture.plist) in the following path:
  5. /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Celestial.framework/N88/

  6. Restart the iPhone 3GS

If everything went well, you can record videos with a quality similar to the following example:

Actualización: a user of the iSpazio website (SimonePSP) has created a .deb file that avoids performing all the previous steps. We warn you that it is not the official version of the tweak. To download it you have to add the following repo in Cydia:

cydia.myrepospace.com/simonepsp/

    Has anyone tried the repo?
    Can we trust ourselves?

From my personal point of view, I would follow the tutorial. These are very simple steps that I very much doubt will lead to mistakes. The official Cydia tweak is a matter of days (rather hours) before it appears. Anyway, if any of you try the SimonePSP repo, let them tell the rest of the users about their experience. All the best!

Tested and it jumps both recording and playback, at least in my case ...

  4.   DEVICE said

... well, apparently no one has dared to try.
For now, I prefer to stay as I am, since from what you can see the example video is made with very smooth movements, but when at times the filming moves the iPhone in a "less smooth" way, the registration is made choppy.

What happens is the author of the post does not clarify well, the post exists since yesterday in other sites, and since they do not try before and they put like that because yes ...

If it works yes, but they do not clarify, it gives video jumps always, conclusion, it is not useful to work in 3gs, I mean, it is an achievement, and what good it is activated, but it is not really useful because of the problem that is generates, and I doubt that it will be repaired, it is because the processor does not resist etc.

    regards

I have tried the "MANUAL" way and if it seems that the size of the video rises, I have not noticed such a significant difference as to go around snooping through the iphone directories
    I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT.

    I tried the repo… it's perfect!

I've had it for quite some time and it works great. I did it manually, editing the files and it works perfect. The disadvantage is the size of the files, it is very high

  9.   ema said

I did the manual steps and when I enter the camera the image moves too slowly .. now when I step to film everything is perfect .. the only thing it does is increase the size, so you also see more flaws in the filming. .

I just followed the tutorial and it works, I uploaded a test video and if you leave it in 720p http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oei8Uvdbp10

I have tried it and it seems to me that it is fine I have to test it in environments with more light in the repo I had to restore the iphone so I DO NOT RECOMMEND this method but the other one, enjoy.

    does it work for you?

The iPhone 3G (s) camera is not native 720p… the only thing this Tweak does is record larger, rescaled files. Nothing else. I do not know why this misleading advertising ... records at 1280 × 720 yes ... but rescaled from 640 × 480. Now, compare to record with an iPhone4 / iTouch 4G and a 3G (S) with this Tweak and you will see how the difference is obvious.

Perfect! tested with the tutorial and it goes great. Thanks
P.S. Also make a backup copy of all replaced files.

Hello, I have added the trick through cydia, but after restarting and recording a video, when I copy it to the pc and see its information, it keeps putting 640 x 480. It should change to the new resolution,
do not? Does it have to be activated in any setting?
    Thank you.

Will the update 4.1 or the latest 4.2 activate the native 3gs in 720? Or is it not due to software, I see the comments and I don't know what to think, possibly one of the forum knows about photography and clarifies us ...

  17.   if2030 said

I agree with Raúl's comment, after trying this method, it is very noticeable that the recording is rescaled, it shows in the definition.
I have the same effect with a video recorded in 640 × 480, downloaded on the pc and then passing it some software to raise the resolution.
It's a far cry from what the iphone 4 lens actually does.
Therefore there is no way that 720 recording is native and it does not depend only on the processor but also on the camera lens

Am I the only one that following the manual the 3gs records at 1080p? :

  19.   Juan said

It records me at 1080 × 800 like everyone else I suppose and I watch the videos quite well, although I don't know if there will be much difference in quality to the previous version

  20.   mcniar said

How do you see the video format? I do not see how much it is recorded ...

  21.   Juan said

I have seen it when transferring the videos to the pc, but they say that the fps increases and I do not know how to watch it

  22.   Juan said

I have seen it when transferring the videos to the pc, but they say that the fps increases and I do not know how to watch it, by the way there is already a rev3

Can someone share the original files that I forgot to save a backup copy and this system seems like a scam to me

    Thank you

  24.   Be said

Well, I can't test it because I don't know how to enter those folders from the mac = (

I hope you can answer me a question, I have a 3GB iPhone 16GS and I have several apps and music, and I would like to know if filming using this method using SUPER HD would take up too much space, please clarify, if I film a minute how many MB does it spend on the iPhone ????
