Tutorial: Calibrate your iPhone battery to improve its status

iphone-battery1

We are many maqueros who habitually (usually every month) calibrate the batteries of our laptops, since it is an action that maintains its useful life and even increases its real capacity, as impossible as it may seem. But it is an action that is not done so much on mobile phones, when it should be.

Calibrating a battery correctly is straightforward, although it does require certain sacrifices of use. I'm going to put the complete form (there are other shorter ones), which is the one that works for me:

  1. Use your iPhone until it runs out of battery, that is, until it turns itself off. If you get bored, put a video without sound and leave it upside down (it's an idea).
  2. Let it sit for 6 or 8 hours completely off and without connecting it to anything. I would do this at night, for example.
  3. Connect it to the mains and leave it charging for 6 to 8 hours. During this time you can use it if you want, but always connected.
  4. Enjoy your iPhone with its newly calibrated battery. I assure you that the results are better than you might think ...

It's not that complicated, is it? Perhaps the most crappy of all is the fact of having it turned off for 8 hours, but at night it is done with great pleasure, especially if the next day there is no work ...

As for the interval, I recommend doing it every month, although every two months it can be worth it. I hope it helps you ...

@Javi, Apple laptop batteries are also lithium and they recommend calibrating them themselves, here you have it:

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/es/9036.html

It is nothing new, but I already told you that doing it once a month is more than recommended, both in laptops and in everything that moves with lithium batteries.

It is a good idea really. Although I would like to do it, as I'm going to happen, for what I have left with my 3GS »3 or 4 months» until the 4G comes out because I don't care about the battery now. 😀

  3.   Javi said

Well, I believed the same, but I regret to tell you that with lithium-ion batteries this does not work, the nickel ones do but not the new ones for years, so what a novelty:

Ok once a month yes, sorry, I had not noticed the beginning of the post, I commented on it because I am one of those who always lets download the battery of everything I have and then charge it and I saw that article, that is why I was commenting on it…. .

I have the iphone 3g since October 2008, I have never done this to calibrate the battery (the truth is that I did not even know it) and the battery lasts at full capacity, I have not noticed a decrease in time at all.
That is if practically 100% of the time I let it discharge to the maximum until it turns off and I charge it completely sometimes leaving it for a few hours.

I understand that the improvement in battery capacity is practically negligible ... what if it improves is its useful life, and let's say that the battery meter is more in line with reality ... at least with MacBooks ..... right?

As my own experience: on my macbook pro I do the calibration following the steps recommended by apple (do it once a month, charge up to 100% and leave about two more hours charging, discharge completely, let it rest for at least 5 hours and charge up to 100%) and since I have it it is always at 95% of its capacity, so I am not very clear that calibration is of much use.

On the iPhone I do the same, but I don't know of any application that provides battery health, so I can't tell you.

    A greeting.

    Good,
My experience with the subject, at first I almost became obsessed with the battery, its use, its loading, its discharge (with the macbook) ... etc etc, all kinds of things, from a couple of years to this part, I just use it as it gives me I feel like it, this one like this, I enjoy it, I don't worry at all and do you know what I've noticed? Nothing, there is no difference, at least in my case, with the iPhone the same, I have the 2 g, and everything happens, and I do not notice that when I did the whole issue of downloading, recharging, etc., it will last longer. I have come to the conclusion that they are machines, the one that works well will work well for a long time, the one that has problems, because it will always give you the rest, well, it may be fine, but come on, do it when one remember and that at most, if it catches you well, if not, not even that, as I say, I have not calibrated the macbook for more than 2 years, I recharge it when it has 75% left, 80% and nothing, no difference

Well, one thing is clear, calibrating the battery once a month does not hurt and in any case can only do good.

now, everyone to do it ... if they want.

    xD

It does neither good nor bad. It just "doesn't."

I had not tested calibration on the iPhone until today. So far I have found a surprise: after completely downloading the iPhone and leaving it for more than 8 hours, it started me and worked for a few minutes.

I have already fully charged it and will calibrate it again next weekend. In the calibration carried out today, the chip has discovered a piece of battery that did not have it.

Some don't understand what battery calibration is at Apple. It is a process that calibrates the chip that is responsible for suspending due to lack of battery. If it is not calibrated, it can suspend before reaching the «reserve» or discharge the battery without suspending itself, with the consequent loss of data in the event of a capon shutdown. It also improves the calculation of the remaining time as the chip knows the real limits of the battery.

I hope I have explained a little what calibration is and its importance.

I just recalibrated the battery on my iPhone 3g and at the moment it has been on for 48 hours and the battery has only dropped to 97%.

Of course, I will repeat the process every month.

Does anyone know if it hurts to leave it plugged in more than necessary to the battery or if the supply is simply cut off and it does not matter? On both laptops and iPhone, thank you.

    Dear friends, greetings from Peru.
After reading this note, I applied the procedure to my old Gateway laptop with Windows 7, which was getting the message to replace the battery (and an "x" above the battery icon).

Basically I totally discharged the battery, until it didn't turn on, then I charged it to 100% while it was off - voila, now the error message on the battery is gone and everything is normal.

I'm going to apply it to my iphone, it is clear that the only thing it can do is improve things.
    All the best

This is the vdd I do not know what to say once I left my iPhone 3g charging like those of about 6 hours in later I noticed that the image of the battery indicated 100% the next day I was very surprised because it continued to show the same amount then I started to think about what had happened to me before: I will explain it to you ……… .. Sometimes the sprinboard failed me because the images of the icons of some applications did not see… nothing else looked white…. Another is that also the failure of the sprinboard affected me in what is the image of the battery ...... because, returning to what I had told you I realized that the image of the battery indicated that it had a 20% life which I got to worry that I thought that the battery no longer worked, but later I realized why I thought °° since it was over because it was over for a good time °°° so I started playing and listening to music ,,, of There I was surprised that for a long time that 20% lasted the same as when it was at 100% of its normal capacity, but all this started because I left my iPhone downloaded and turned off for a while, I don't know about 2 hours , then I wanted to turn it on but it turned on and I had a respring I had to turn it on about 4 times and the same thing was doing me already like the 5th it returned to normality but with the defect that the sprinboard did what I told you …… ..
Going back to what is the issue of what is the calibration ,,,,,, one day it gave me another surprise because in the same way I left charging my iphone for about 7 hours and that charged lasted a whole day with the resources of the wifi , games, download and install applications and listen to music ,,, and it still indicated 100% ,, but how I saved the applications on the pc and how I had to connect it, let's say it loaded it for a while ,,,, later I discovered that that 100% disappeared ,, leaving the battery to normal ...... tell me if it hurts that the battery does not discharge at all ,, I do not imagine that perhaps at that time it was forced a lot, thus cutting what the useful life is of the battery ,, sorry for the long comment is that I had to write everything if not ,, I was not satisfied and thank you for your attention
