Tutorial: what are SHSHs and what are they for? (Updated 4/06/11)

Icon0TutorialSHSH Tutorial: what are SHSHs and what are they for

Why do SHSH appear?

Apple, tired of the jailbreak, introduces a new iPhone 3GS (new bootrom) and begins to require a signature to install a firmware, that is, the .ipsw of any iOS are incomplete, to be able to install them they lack a unique signature of your device, that's why you can only install the latest firmware, because it is the only one that Apple signs.

Where do the SHSH come from?

SHSH can only leave Apple, you request a restoration with a firmware and Apple has to give you your signature so that you can install it, otherwise the restoration will fail.

What is an SHSH?

We can say that it is an electronic signature, to make a comparison it is like a DNI (identity document in Spain) with the difference that you need a new one for each new firmware that Apple releases.

What do we use SHSH for in the world of jailbreak?

We use them to be able to restore to previous versions, as we have said we can only update to the latest version because Apple only signs that version.

But if we have the SHSH saved we can update to the version we want (as long as we have the SHSH of that version).

Sometimes they are used for a type of jailbreak that requires a beta file, for example, for the untethered MONTE jailbreak we need iOS 4.2.1 (and its SHSH that Apple now gives us because it is the latest firmware) and a file of iOS 4.2b3, therefore, to install this file we will need the SHSH of iOS 4.2b3.

How are SHSH stored?

There are two ways to save the SHSH, if you have the jailbreak done every time a new firmware appears Cydia will AUTOMATICALLY save your SHSH without you having to do anything.

Whether you have jailbroken or not, there is another way to save them, a program called TinyUmbrella available for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Can I only save the SHSH of the version I have installed?

NO, you can only save the SHSH of the latest version that Apple offers through iTunes, regardless of the version that you have on your iPhone.

UPDATED:

You can save the SHSH of the latest version that Apple offers through iTunes with TinyUmbrella, and now you can also save the SHSH of the version that you have installed on your iPhone (even if it is older) with iFaith.

So how do I get an SHSH from a version older than the one I have installed?

You simply CANNOT, as we have said you can only get the SHSH of the version that is officially in iTunes, that is, you either saved it at the time or there is no way to do it.

UPDATED:

You can also get the SHSH of the iOS version you have installed.

Where are SHSHs kept?

What we do is request the signature (SHSH) from Apple, and save it on a Cydia server, you can also save them on your computer in case there is any catastrophe to be able to send them back to the Cydia server.

How are SHSHs obtained from Cydia?

When you install a new firmware iTunes connects to an Apple server and requests the SHSH, what we do is modify the host file of our computer (the file where our computer tells iTunes where it has to connect to request the SHSH) so that instead of asking Apple, ask Cydia for them, this way we can get the signature to restore to older firmwares

How do I modify this Host file?

The easiest thing is to download TinyUmbrella and the same program will modify it automatically.

Hello, good explanation, at the same time I want to take advantage of why I have a problem, I bought an iPhone 3gs, and it was downloaded, when I loaded it and turned it on, it restarted every 5 minutes, I said that I had to go to ituns and restore, I had ios 4.1 I think ... so what I did was give it to restore to original mode, which I thought would be fast, it had already taken about 1 hour and nothing, only the apple appeared, then I investigated a little on the network and I saw that I had to put it in dfu and connect it to ituns, but I have already given restore and nothing, I get the error (-1) when trying to update it to the most recent version, then I saw some videos where they explain that you can download previous versions of ios such as 3.1 and 4.1, 4.2 and so on. So when I open ituns and select shift + restore I get the error 3194, I saw that I had to change the hosts and I did it and nothing, I installed and opened tiny umbrella and it does not recognize my iphone, it does not appear in the list of devices , and then install ifaith and try to get the shsh and nothing also marks me an error, it does not recognize the ios, it stays in that validation step I think ... so I would appreciate your comments to be able to restore the iphone, as I told you the problem It was to give him restore and he had neither a backup copy nor the saved shsh, I found out about that step already when it was blocked and I began to investigate!

They are useless anymore unless you have an iPhone 4 in a fairly old edition of iOS.
