Twitch rolls out the long-awaited SharePlay feature on iOS

SharePlay, what's new in iOS, iPadOS, tvOS 15 and macOS Monterey

With the arrival of iOS 15, the functionality of SharePlay came to FaceTime, where users would have the possibility to view chapters of our favorite series, movies or any streaming service that adapts to it at the same time as a friend or family member. Well, according to an update from Twitch, they would already be integrating this functionality, being able to see streams together during FaceTime calls.

Twitch has added support for SharePlay functionalities on its platform and application. Thus, allow users to jointly view any video on the platform. Our favorite streamer, a delayed video, a video game event broadcast… whatever.

Yesterday Twitch made the official communication through its Twitter. The sharePlay option is available on devices with iOS 15.1 or higher in the same way as with iPadOS 15.1. Not so for Apple TV, where this feature is not yet available.

In order to start a SharePlay session, users we will have to be in an active FaceTime call and have all the Twitch app installed (besides being Logged in, of course).

Once we have started the sharePlay session through FaceTime, all the participants of the call will be synchronized at the same point of video playback. In addition, the controls that affect video playback (pause, play, fast forward or backward video) will also be synchronized.

Also, good news (and well implemented) for the streamers of this platform is that, each user on the call will count as a viewer, being able to have a more real control of your visitors and to be able to direct or analyze your work in more detail.

We think it is a good idea for Twitch to implement this functionality early, betting on attracting more followers through word of mouth and on the ease of being able to comment with friends or family on any playback anywhere and in a synchronized way. Ending this way with that «have you seen the stream of ...? When…". We hope that little by little the rest of the applications will be updated in the same way to enjoy this functionality.
