Twitter temporarily disables the ability to post tweets via SMS

Twitter

Jack Dorsey, current CEO of Twitter, founded the microblogging network in 2006 with Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams. At that time, smartphones, as we know them now, did not exist. To try to make it easier for users to use this new service, Twitter allowed to send SMS to a specific number to publish in your account.

Last week Jack Dorsey saw how his Twitter account was hacked Due to a series of vulnerabilities that mobile operators have and that should be solved sooner rather than later. This seems to be one of the reasons why the microblogging platform has announced that for now it is no longer possible to publish tweets via SMS.

In the post that the company has published announced this decision, they do not report the time that this service will be inactive, although it states that will begin to be reestablished in countries where communication via SMS is completely secure.

We are temporarily disabling the ability to send text messages or SMS to protect user accounts. We are taking this step due to vulnerabilities that need to be addressed by mobile operators and our reliance on having a linked phone number for two-factor authentication (we are working to improve it).

We will reactivate it in markets that rely on SMS for reliable communication shortly, while we work on our long-term strategy for this feature.

The possibility of publishing tweets via SMS is not available in Spain, however it is is available in a large number of Latin American countries such as Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Paraguay, as well as in a large number of Arab and African countries.
