When Apple released the Apple Watch it also released a new typeface they named San Francisco. That font was specifically designed to combine a clean image with readability on a screen as small as the one used by the bitten apple smartwatch.
Last week we wrote that Apple will not limit this typeface to the Apple Watch, but he also plans to use the font on iPhones, Macs, and iPads, at the same time replacing the Helvetica Neue as part of the novelties that will arrive with iOS 9 and OS X 10.11. Designer Wenting Zhang describes the font by saying “the beautiful details of the shapes of the kind that are often overlooked".
TypeDetail is acclaimed by typography fans and reveals a few details that make San Francisco easy to read even at very small sizes. One of the keys to its readability is related to its dimensions: lowercase letters are around 75% the size of uppercase, making lowercase larger than a normal font. In the hole for letters like "a" or "e", the space between the tail and the rest of the letter is also larger than usual. On the Type Detail website you see the typeface in various sizes and intensities and they say that it is similar to Open Sans or Arial.
This typeface will be one of the few “visible” novelties that will arrive with iOS 9 and OS X, which are expected to be presented next June 8 at WWDC 2015, since the new Apple operating systems will focus more on system quality than adding new changes and features.
