UAG Scout, the perfect complement to your Smart Keyboard Folio

The iPad Pro with its Apple Pencil and Apple's Smart Keyboard Folio form a round set, but there is something that worries its users: the poor protection offered by the Apple case. UAG Scout comes to solve that problem and does it in a fantastic way.

Apple's keyboard cover, Smart Keyboard Folio, has a truly spectacular design, with an extreme thinness and lightness that makes it difficult to think that a physical keyboard can be included in its cover. No need for a Bluetooth connection or internal battery thanks to the Smart Connector that also gives it the possibility of being “Plug & Play” Without needing to configure anything in the settings of our device are other of its great strengths when deciding on it or another third-party model. However, it has a weak point: poor device protection.

iPad Pro with Smart Keyboard Folio

Its minimalist design completely reveals the frames of the iPad Pro, which makes any fall to the ground susceptible to hitting directly the aluminum frame of our precious tablet, irreparably damaging. This has been something that has caused many users to forget their great virtues, opting for other cases that are worse in other respects but that offer greater protection. UAG (Urban Armor Gear) offers us an alternative that allows us to use all the great things about the Smart Keyboard Folio, and also protect our iPad Pro.

This is the UAG Scout case for iPad Pro, available for all iPad Pro models with a USB-C connection, i.e. as of 2018, and is only compatible with the Smart Keyboard Folio, not with the Magic Keyboard that incorporates trackpad. Made of thermoplastic polyurethane, UAG achieves a lightweight case that with a minimum thickness protects the iPad Pro + Smart Keyboard Folio set, and that allows you to continue using the Apple keyboard cover without losing any of its properties.

It is a case very similar to any back cover for iPad, without a front cover, and it has all the necessary holes for speakers, connectors, microphones, etc. Of course you can continue using all the physical buttons of the terminal (volume and power) and It also has a special space emit dedicated for the Apple Pencil, which can still be placed in its charging place, but now you will not run the risk of falling to the ground with any small blow. Its weight is 198 grams, which is not a problem in practice if we take into account what it offers us.

The UAG Scout case has a peculiarity to be used together with the Smart Keyboard Folio, and that is that its lower third has a “hinge” that allows us to imitate the movement of the keyboard cover, so we can place our iPad Pro in the the two positions that the Apple case allows us to use the keyboard or enjoy multimedia content. The fit made by UAG is tremendously good And you will not have to force the movement or do anything strange to open the iPad, all movements are as natural as before.

Another thing that I really liked about this case was how the iPad is “closed” with the cover of the Smart Keyboard folio. Everything fits very well and the design is calculated to the millimeter so that there are no gaps or bad adjustments. The UAG Scout case looks as if it were another element of the iPad case, it does not seem to be an accessory added to the set. Removing the iPad Pro from the two cases to keep only the tablet in hand is easy, although here you do have to overcome a couple of tabs that the case has to fit well. It is not a major problem and just one second more of your time.

The military certification of the UAG Scout case (810G-516.6) is a peace of mind when it comes to knowing that your iPad will be well protected with it. It is not a matter of testing the certification to see if it fulfills what it promises, but knowing the trajectory of UAG, If your iPad falls to the ground with this case on, you will surely hold your breath but not cry.

Editor's opinion

If you like Apple's Smart Keyboard Folio but are concerned about its poor level of protection, this case from UAG is just what you've been looking for. Sacrificing a bit of thickness and weight (inevitably) It offers you protection with military certification and all this without losing all the benefits of the Apple keyboard cover, which you can continue using without noticing anything different. It also offers support for the Apple Pencil, a point that is not given too much importance but that is appreciated when you have it.
