One of the (which was) best players for iOS, VLC it is now also available for the fourth generation Apple TV. At the time of writing these lines it is not available under search, but it must be downloaded from the purchased applications if we had already downloaded it from an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. As the developers say, the version of tvOS It is a slightly modified version of the iOS version, so it is possible that it also includes its worst flaw, a painful lack of support for the AC3 codec.
In the absence of being able to add movies via iTunes, in order to add movies to the fourth generation Apple TV we have to one of the ways that developers have been able to include to meet the requirements of the tvOS App Store. In the United States, I have seen that it is possible to connect with cloud services, but that option is not available to me.
Add movies to VLC for tvOS
- Local network. If we have a local network, we use SMB, or a UPnP multimedia server we can access its files from VLC. This is perfect for simply searching and playing content.
- Remote playback. If you have used VLC for iOS, this option to add movies will be familiar to you. We only have to put one of the two URLs that we see when we enter that option in our computer's browser to enter the load manager, drag the multimedia content to the browser window and wait for it to upload completely. The content is stored on the Apple TV.
- Network dump. In this option we can play streaming videos from a URL.
Little by little applications are arriving on the tvOS App Store that make our little set-top box the device we are waiting for. The problem with VLC for iOS and its variants is that they do not include support for a widely used codec such as AC3 (to be confirmed), but we already have another quality player available so that we have options to choose from.
Confirmed, does not support AC3
Since the MrMC (port "cut" of Kodi, but fully functional except for not being able to install add-ons) I no longer use or look for any other player for my AppleTV
here a PLEX user, and delighted. I don't need any more players.
