Vodafone's trick to detect tethering

When my Vodafone iPhone a week ago iTunes told me there was a update carrier settings, but I decided not to install it and enter the data by hand.

Later i downloaded that ipcc to the computer to see what apn I was getting, pure curiosity. Which was very surprise when I found what you see above, Vodafone sets different settings for the internet connection and for tethering, so it is very easy to detect it for them; that ready.

Well, the solution it's very easy (beware, maybe vodafone has other ways of detecting it). Do not install these operator settings and enter them by hand. If you already have them, you will have to restore so that the same options as me appear in the settings.

And in mobile data network you must put:

Mobile data

Is this also valid for using Skype? Vadofone says that you cannot use Skype with the rates of € 15 or € 19,90. Is there a way to prevent Vodafone from discovering that you use Skype?
    Thank you

So easy is it that they don't realize it?
By the way, I give it to restore network data and it becomes without that option, or did you mean that you have to delete and new account from iTunes?

    effectively, erased and new account.

The same thing happened to me, as the option to update appeared and it kept coming out, I was so stupid to update. I used mywi and vodafone did not catch me with airtelnet.es and now that I have updated I am waiting for the invoice to come to me in case I have bundled it in addition to seeing if they charge me for the fring

So can I have tethering with the € 15 fee?

For this and many other reasons I will not trust Vodafone again 🙂

I would take this with care. certainly the simplest way to control tethering would be to use a specific setting. However, it is not the only tool that companies have for such control. I would test (with a lot of fear and a lot of terror) to see if the company detects it (short tests and checking the charges a day or two later through billing via the web). I understand that if this system is valid, companies will have to use other types of filters that are more complicated to skip. If to make use of a certain service (see Skype), the application uses a specific port, this can be detected very easily by the companies and then take out the rooms in the final invoice. As I said, before jumping into the void and using this option indiscriminately, I would do some tests.

Sure, as the colleague says, they surely have other ways of detecting it.
    So be careful.

and entering the data by hand can you? is that the official IPCC have an authentication hash and if you modify something, that hash no longer validates and the tethering option is deactivated.

when it came out, movistar was using a different APN for tethering and for browsing from the iphone. They did it to slow down the speed with tethering and I guess to do market research to see how much people were using the service.

In the latest IPCC updates from movistar, the APN for navigation and tethering is already the same. In fact now there is only 1 apn, which is used for everything, mms, visual voicemail, tethering and navigation.

The problem with airtelnet is that they lower the speed when passing 300 mb per month, while with airtelwap they do not lower it, at least since I have had Android phones. If with the iPhone it changes, I shut up.

This week, my partner, who has had a 2G iPhone for a year with Vodafone, received an SMS from this company where they advised that they had activated the € 15 rate per data connection.
Thus, without having asked for it or having called him to offer him anything. And his response has been that they have detected that he has a 'superior mobile'.
    This should be reportable !!

One thing, the ipcc thing, you can delete it if you have the jailbreak phone, and it should work, I don't know where the file is, (I found it on the phone at the time) If you have an iphone 4 jailbreak, by ssh, you execute «find / -name * .ipcc »and it should come out, along with everyone else. (If I remember correctly, it was inside a Library / mobileservice / folder or something like that, although I don't remember it)

    Luck!

Well for me the option "mobile data network" disappears when I have the sim of movistar inside…. I can't edit them even if I want to

  16.   jiraiya said

mydoctor, if Vodafone detects a SINGLE USE OF TETHERING, it will automatically raise you to the highest data connection rate without notifying you or without your consent. Orange directly prohibits them (although it is rethinking it: ha!) Which seems to me a better option because bitching the staff based on invoices is going to be fleeing to the rock.

Unfortunately for this issue the best operator is Vomistar. You have your 200Mb of download, if you want to use P2P, Tethering or VozIp there you but from those 200Mb you will go to 126 kb / s.

They should outlaw those practices. It is my data rate and I get it ... as I want!

  17.   melon kid said

The article, when it talks about restoring, refers not to restoring network settings: it refers to restoring the system, from iTunes. This way you can re-enter the data.

As for MyWi… I don't think it is counted as tethering, because I've been using it and the tethering data counter that iOS4 carries has not moved.

  18.   melon kid said

By the way, the apn I use for Vodafone is ac.vodafone.es and not the one for airtelnet.

  19.   josuzgz said

Looking at it, I saw that it said that if the conditions are breached, they could change your rate but in that case with notice and with the option to cancel the contract without penalty for rate change. I do not know if it opens read correctly or there is another section that says something else, but I read that.

  20.   Álvaro said

Let's see, YOU DO NOT GET UP TO A MORE EXPENSIVE RATE IF YOU DO TETHERING OR VOIP.
I have in my hands the data rate contract and after reading it carefully several times I have verified that in no clause of the same it says that they can raise you to a more expensive rate.

  21.   Joker said

They told me by phone that using voip or tethering when a contract does not allow it is like requesting that it be activated, which leads to the change to a contract that offers your request, that is, the expensive

  22.   mydoctor said

Jiraiya, just comment on what you write, that masmovil (which uses the orange network) allows tethering at no extra cost. This makes me think that the big operators only block it to get more money. I laugh at the supposed competition between Spanish operators. if you look at it, NONE of the big companies EVER takes out a revolutionary data or service rate. They are taking them out with a dropper and almost always at the same time.

    Hi, I'm David, I'm new.

Yesterday I received my brand new iphone 4 ... I have listened to Gnzl and I have not updated the operator services, I have been doing tests and with airtelnet.es towards speed test with the same iphone and 6 mb came out, when changing to airtelwap.es the thing went down to about 3-4 mb (3g coverage at full throttle and downwind). On the other hand, when I tried to use the visual mailbox, he put me in contact with the carrier. Has it happened to you?
Does the visual mailbox work for you?

    Thanks and regards.

    Hello everybody !!

I am also a bit new to this and after reading all your question-answers I am a mess. I have 2 questions:

1.- Where can I change the airtelwap or airtelweb? Which one should I put?

2.- I have my iphone 4 with vodafone with its corresponding rate of 15 euros… what happens if I use skype at any given moment? And if I go over those 200? Mb that are included in the rate that I am paying?

They are 200Mb (approx) but if I change airtelwap to airtelweb there is no limit as I read your opinions, right?

    I'M MAKING A MISTAKE !!!!

    Please help me !!

    Thank you very much.

If you go over those megabytes, browsing with your iphone b or they charge you more, it is simply supposed to slow down.
On the other hand, that rate you have does not allow voip calls (skype) or tethering (use your iphone as if it were a usb modem of these 3g from vodafone).
The solution they have provided above is so that vodafone does not detect that you are tethering with your iphone. But I don't know if I would sneak in for a long time. You will not have more megabytes to navigate at high speeds on your iphone or you will not be able to make voip calls over 3g (for wifi there is no problem eye)

  26.   Joker said

And as it occurs to you to use voip calls with your rate, it is assumed that without prior notice they will change you to € 39, which is the only one that this service covers.
I have not been able to verify if it is so, nor do I want to verify it, so if someone who has dared to use it has been changed, if you post it here you will do a favor to the community

  27.   L said

The rate of € 12 in principle (airtelnet.es) has no limit and the tethering is not blocked, when they got that rate they did not consider it, and I do not think they can change the conditions of the contract so why yes.

  28.   Miguel said

The operators detect in another way that you are tethering, with the headers of the browsers. Even so, there are ways to mislead them very easily.

How can you do without being detected?

  30.   I have thetering without doing anything said

Hello, I have a pleasant surprise on my iphone 4 and it is that without having done anything
having contracted the rate of 15 euros, I have thetering on the iphone.
I updated and did everything that iTunes asked me to do, I activated internet sharing (knowing that I did not have that function in my rate) but to fiddle with my new iPhone, when I connected it with the cable to my macbook pro, the Airport He told me that he had found a new type of internet connection via ethernet adapter (at 3).
The iphone turned blue and said sharing the internet. I deactivated the wifi on my computer and put the iphone on 3g, and I could surf on the laptop using my iphone as a router !!!

  31.   But ... and your rate is still € 15? said

Well, that… do you know if your rate is still € 15? Did you have it with Vodafone or with another company?

    That's my question !!!!

    Help us please !!!

  32.   I have tethering without doing anything said

Well, I have the rate of 15 euros from Vodafone. What I don't know is if they charge you if you use tethering.
I thought you had the option, not that if you use it they will bill you separately.
You leave me with the doubt. We will have to wait for the arrival of the invoice.

  33.   Let us know when it arrives !!! said

    Attention!!!
If you are going to update to ios 4.1, you know that it will automatically install the operator settings and all this is going to waste. The ios 4.1 has them implemented.
Because of that I can no longer use the logmein app for remote desktop over 3g.
    I will surely reinstall 4.0.1

  35.   ST2 said

  36.   Joker said

Through google there are many pages that explain it, it does not seem very complicated

  37.   joker said

People! I found the solution, both for those of you who have installed ios 4.1 and those who accidentally gave them to update the operator settings, you simply have to enter http://www.unlockit.co.nz From your iphone, you give custom APN you select ES Vodafone below and above you put the airtelnet.es vodafone vodafone and you install the new apn and it is solved without the need to restore.

I have two contract iPhones and a flat data rate with Movistar of 15 euros each. Indeed, the speed drops to 120 kbps when you have downloaded more than 200 megabytes. I jailbroken the two phones and installed the fabulous and recommended Mywi program that turns the iPhone into a Wi-Fi router and bypasses the speed limitation of 120 kbps. I guess they detected me because of the speed because they left me the two fried iPhones with the apple and the black screen in addition to messing up one of the sim cards. I have been able to restore them and I have done the Jailbreak again but I do not dare to put Mywi in it. What is your opinion. There is a right to do this when they told me that my rate was flat with no download limit. They didn't tell me anything about the download speed drop.

The TetherMe application allows you to hide the use of tethering from the operator, but if somehow the network settings had already been updated, TetherMe was useless.
Therefore, TetherMe APN Editing allows you to modify the APN settings and make TetherMe work correctly.
It is available in Cydia for free, although TetherMe costs $ 1,99, also available in CydiaStore.

It is that they have very little shame. If I have a certain data rate (flat or not), what I pay is the data and I should be able to use it on my mobile phone, on my pc or in the toaster.
It is as if you go to a gas station, you ask how much is the liter of gasoline and they tell you: according to. If it is to throw it at 600 at 0,8 per liter, if it is for a Mercedes at 1,50. Ah! and if it goes to As is.

Yesterday I called Vodafone customer service and not even the operators know how tethering works, a girl told me that the limit was 150Mb, another that 4Gb, the website indicates 300Mb. "Supposedly" the limit is 300Mb, after that they reduce the speed and no modification, update, jailbreak, ... is required on the iPhone 4, however, the information is so ambiguous in all cases that anyone trusts.

    Link to the "alleged" rate:

But x logical if I modify these parameters let's say that automatically I am going to the most expensive data rate, right? Because this apn would be the one that the € 39 data uses ... I have changed them and they work, the speed increases from 3 to 6 megabytes x 3g and the truth is that it is cool hehe «now the bad thing is that then I get scared» x if anything I leave it as it was and I'll see hehe.

Do not worry, I have been with the APN changed since August 15 and I am enjoying those 6 megabytes (I have reached 7,2 at some point in Barcelona) and the rate has not been modified, yes, I have the 19,90 and I have never used VoIP.

Look from this website you can change the APN data http://www.unlockit.co.nz/ You have to put airtelnet.es. But the point is that by entering this data you will connect with your iPhone as if you were doing tethering and they will probably change you at the rate of 19,90 that is the one that allows you to do so.
PS: I personally think that it is a bit of an urban legend that the rate change for the entire hill ...

    Hi guys,
What IP's does the ISP give you to those of you who have Vodafone? Before, it connected me automatically and it gave me an IP of type 10.xxx (local vodafone ip) and after doing JB to 4.1 ... since I was not connecting to the mobile data network, I came to this post, and I have put the data that are named here (I do not know what I had before). What I am sure of is that before the IP of the APN network was of the type 10.20xxx etc ... and now it gives me a public IP (77.210.xx) ... my question is ... are they going to charge me more? A public IP is still more expensive and faster ...
