Watchsmith shows us the potential for complications in watchOS

The Apple Watch has been a device that has evolved a lot since its launch, and which still has a long way to go, with enormous potential that Apple has not yet fully exploited. As a sample we have the WatchSmith application, which allows us to customize the complications of our watch and make them change according to the time of day.

A brilliant idea

Since the Apple Watch was launched, there has been talk of the need for Apple to customize the faces of our watch to a much higher level than we can do right now. A sphere shop under the strict control of the brand is something that will surely end up happening at some point in the nearest future, but in the meantime the imagination of the developers shows us that even with the few possibilities that Apple offers us right now, a lot can be done.

Watchsmith debuted in the App Store just 24 hours ago, and takes advantage of the complications of watchOS to customize not only the appearance of our Apple Watch, but also the information it offers us on the dials. Taking advantage of the different types of complications that watchOS has, depending on the type of sphere we use and its location within that sphere, it allows us with a single app to configure different complications that show us the time, calendar appointments, battery remaining, the phases of the moon, the stars that are seen in our location, etc. What's more we can configure these complications so that depending on the time it shows us different information: in the morning the time it does, at noon the appointments on our agenda, in the afternoon the progress of our activity rings ...

Watchsmith also includes apps within its own app for watchOS, so we can use it for our exercise with such interesting options in this time of confinement such as interval training, or information about the moon phase and even the classic game of the ball that bounces on a stick that we control with the crown of the Apple Watch.

Improvable design and functionality

The app is a true Swiss Army knife for those who want to dig into it and configure their watch complications, with a huge number of options available. However, in my opinion, the execution of this brilliant idea is hampered by little care in the design of the application and complications. In my particular case, I prefer to see the complications that I already have on my Apple Watch using different apps (Fantastical, HomeRun, Carrot Weather…) because I have them already installed on my iPhone anyway. Watchsmith brings together several apps in one, but it does not reach the level of design and functionality of any of those apps, it doesn't even come close. The possibility of changing the content of the complication according to the time of day attracts me, but it does not compensate for this problem that I am mentioning.

The application can now be downloaded from the App Store (link) completely free for you to try and believe your own opinion. If you are one of those who sees the enormous potential of this app with bright eyes I'm sure you'll be happy to pay € 1,99 per month (€ 21,99 per year if you prefer) that it costs to be able to enjoy its functionality to 100%. At the moment I am waiting to see if future updates improve the aspects that at the moment leave me quite cold.

Is this application paid? Comments come out that they charge € 2 per month or € 22 per year
