We tested HomeKit-compatible Meross bulbs

Light bulbs are the ideal accessory to get started in the world of home automation or to dogmatize all the lighting in the house. we tried two models of the Meross brand, compatible with HomeKit, with different benefits and excellent price.

Two models, different uses

Meross offers us many HomeKit compatible accessories with a Great value for the price, and today we tested two different light bulb models:

  • vintage edison model, warm white light 2700K 6W (equivalent to 60W), A19, dimmable
  • RGB model, white light (2700K-6500K) and RGB colors, 9W (equivalent to 60W), A19, dimmable

Both models are compatible with HomeKit, in addition to the rest of home automation platforms (Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa) and do not need any kind of concentrator to connect to our HomeKit hub (Apple TV, HomePod, HomePod mini).

The Vintage model is perfect to offer a warm light and to show the bulb itself. Its design is identical to that of a conventional light bulb and only the HomeKit QR code can give it away, but it is a sticker that can be removed. Its regulation in intensity allows us to create more intimate or brighter environments. Its light intensity is sufficient for a table lamp or a ceiling lamp in a small room or a hallway at home.

The conventional model has better features, because in addition to offering warm white light, it also allows us cold light and all the colors that the RGB spectrum offers us. It is perfect therefore to give color to a corner or room. For example, a blue light for your games area, or a violet light to watch television without being bothered by excessive light or generating reflections on the screen. Take your imagination and configure it to your liking.

Settings in HomeKit

What can we say about the configuration in HomeKit that we have not already said: fast, simple and direct. No bridges or weird procedures, you don't even need the Meross app (link) if you don't want it. You can use the Casa application only for the configuration and management of the bulbs, you will only need the Meross app for device firmware updates.

Automations, environments and Siri

HomeKit support gives you much more than control from your iPhone. You can create environments by combining accessories from different brands. It does not matter if they are light bulbs, LED strips or any other type of lighting or accessory, you can create an environment that includes them all, each with a different configuration and launch it with a single button or a Siri command. In the video I show the example of the "Games" environment, which combines different lighting elements to create a perfect environment to play video games.

You can create an environment called "Lights" so that all the lights you want turn on, each with an intensity if you wish, or even with different colors, and when you run that environment they will all respond to that command. or the atmosphere "Good night" that turns off all the lights in the house and that when you go to bed you give the order to your HomePod and everything turns off. They are just examples of the potential of HomeKit Environments.

How to use HomeKit Environments and Automations

Automations also go a long way. Can you imagine that the lights turn on when you get home? And that they turn off when the last person leaves your house? You can also have the living room lights come on an hour before sunset, or when you open the door of the house and it is night, the corridor light turns on automatically for a few minutes and then turn off. Combining HomeKit automations and ambiences is the essence of home automation, and lights are perfect for it.

And of course we have Siri to control everything. Home lets you control it from your iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Watch, but Siri lets you do it all from those same devices, or from your HomePod, with just your voice. Get up from the couch and tell HomePod "Goodnight" and the lights will turn off because it will execute that environment that you have previously configured. You can regulate the intensity, the color... Everything you can do with the Home app from your iPhone can be done with your voice using Siri.

Editor's opinion

Lights are a fundamental element in home automation. Saving electricity, creating environments for every occasion, decorating a room with lighting effects... the possibilities they offer us are many, and these two Meross bulbs are perfect for it. Flawless performance and excellent value for money make them a suitable element to get started in home automation or to continue with it.
