We tested VOCOlinc smart lights compatible with HomeKit

Smart lights have become an ideal complement for home lighting and decoration. We tested the Vocolinc LED light bulb and strip, compatible with HomeKit, and we show you what you can do with them.

Smart lights are the accessories that can be used the most at home. Not only can we save energy by programming and automating the lights on and off, but we can also create different environments in our rooms suitable for each moment of the day. Dim the lights to create a more intimate atmosphere, enjoy our movies, dine with friends or read in a pleasant atmosphere. We can also change the colors, or use warmer or colder tones depending on the time of day, etc. A simple light bulb or a simple LED strip offers us many possibilities, and today we tested precisely these Vocolinc brand products, with an excellent value for money and compatible with HomeKit.

VOCOlinc SmartGlow

The Vocolinc L3 bulb uses LED technology to offer us a 850 lumens brightness with a maximum power consumption of just 7.5W although it is equivalent to a conventional 60W bulb. It has shades of white ranging from 2200 to 7000K, and it also has 16 million colors that we can change to our liking. It connects to our home WiFi network, being compatible only with 2.4GHz networks. It is a bulb of the E27 type (thick socket).

The Vocolinc LS2 LED strip also has LED technology with a consumption of 12W maximum and a brightness of 250 lumens per meter. Like the light bulb, it has 16 million colors and warm and cold whites, and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connectivity. Its length is two meters, although it can be trimmed to fit the length we need. It can also be extended another two meters, up to a total of four. As important information, it includes the power adapter, something that these types of strips do not usually bring. On the back we find an adhesive that allows us to place it on any smooth surface.

HomeKit

These are two HomeKit compatible products, so the configuration process is as simple as plugging in, scanning a code with our iPhone, and indicating the room in which they are. For those who use other platforms, they are also compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Asssitant, but here we are going to focus on the uses within Apple's home automation platform.

To use these lights, we do not need any type of bridge, but we will need an accessory center if we want to be able to control them from outside our house or we want to use the automations. These accessory centers can be an Apple TV 4 and Apple TV 4K, a HomePod and an iPad. When using WiFi connectivity, it does not matter how far you place these accessories from the control panel, the WiFi network reaches them is enough.

We can make use of the application that Vocolinc has available in the App Store (link) and with which we can control not only Vocolinc devices but all those that we have added to our HomeKit system. With this app we can turn on, turn off, change the color and apply lighting effects to the lights, and it is also essential to update the firmware when the manufacturer releases updates. Aesthetically it is not the best application we can find, but it works well.

I use the Home application with all my HomeKit devices, which sometimes has its limitations, but is the best for me. We have the same functionalities as in the Vocolinc application, except for updates (which only notifies us that they are available) and color effects, only applicable with the official app of the brand. But the configuration of the automations, the environments and the control of the accessories for me is very intuitive and offers me everything I need.

Have the lights come on when you get home at night, create an environment with the lights dimmed for when you go to see a movie, create a timer so that the light turns off automatically when a certain time passes, or use Siri and your voice to control devices without having to touch your iPhone for nothing are some of the things that can be done thanks to HomeKit. Once you try it, you can't stop using it.

Editor's opinion

Smart lights are an excellent option to start in the world of home automation, and Vocolinc offers us two quality products at a lower price than these types of products usually have. Good response to control through Siri or our iPhone, full integration in HomeKit with all that this means and the ability to use Alexa and Google Assistant if you wish. Between the Meross and VOCOlinc bulbs, you've had a chance to test both.
Which one do you like the most and why? More brightness, functionality ... etc
Meross bulbs have flickering in the tone changes unlike VOCOlinc is it true?
