What can we do with HomeKit-compatible TVs

During the last CES held one more year in Las Vegas, we have seen how Apple has gotten some media attention indirectly, Since one more year, the Cupertino-based company has not had a physical presence at this event, just as it will not have it at the MWC that will be held in Barcelona or at the IFA that is held in Germany every year.

Samsung, Sony, LG and Vizio announced that the models of these manufacturers that hit the market, along with some models that were launched in both 2018 and 2017, will be compatible with AirPlay 2 and HomeKit. But in addition, in the case of Samsung televisions, they will also have access to the iTunes Store movie catalog. But What will we be able to do through HomeKit compatibility?

Although there is still no HomeKit guide on how to manage smart devices for the connected home, apparently it includes support to manage the power, control the volume, the input source, the brightness ... At least that is what the iOS developer Tian Z claims to have found by checking the code in the "plain-metadata-full.config" file on the playback medium, although it is not enabled yet.

  • According to this file, TVs compatible with HomeKit will allow us to:
  • Turn it on
  • Raise or lower the volume
  • Modify the input signal source.
  • Modify the brightness.
  • Control playback (pause, play ...)
  • Picture mode
  • Remote functionalities after configuration.

We know the basics of how HomeKit and AirPlay 2 will work on smart TVs, but the details are scarce. These controls will initially link to Siri so you can wake up the TV, turn up the volume, change the input source, and much more, all with your voice. We also do not know if through Siri we will be able to request our television to play a specific video from a video service streaming or stored on a NAS,
