If we are walking down the street and we find a poster that draws our attention powerfully due to the typeface used, we will most likely take a photograph of it to get home we will use one of the web services that allow us to identify the source of a photograph. The same happens if we are browsing the Internet and we find a font, but being in front of the computer we can quickly consult MyFonts, or any other website that allows us to identify the font of an image. To try to speed up the recognition process, the guys at MyFontst offer us an application directly in the App Store with which we can quickly and from our iPhone find out what type of font has been used.
Thanks to MyFonts we can identify up to 130.000 different fonts directly from our iPhone. As is usual in this type of application, the application makes use of deep learning, to analyze the typeface used and compare it with all those fonts that have similarities until obtaining the name of the typeface. The application does not work miracles and If the font is not in its gigantic database, it offers us the most similar results.
To check if it is the correct typeface, the application will allow us to write a text to check that it has really hit the mark. This application is ideal for designers when they go to visit a client and propose a typeface, a letter that at that moment does not sound familiar to them but which has to be the one that the client wants to use. WhatTheFont is available for download completely free of charge through the following link and requires iOS 10.0 or higher.
MyFonts not only allows us to identify any type of source used through a photograph with our iPhone, but it also offers us access to all the fonts that the application can identify. Some of them are paid, however a large number of them are available for download completely free of charge, making it an excellent tool for designers.
