With the release of iOS 13, do I update or restore from scratch?

iOS 13

Every year Apple releases a new version of iOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS. The iPhone, like the Mac, are the devices that can suffer the most over time in this sense, since throughout the year, we install and delete a large number of applications.

Unfortunately, when we delete the applications that we are not interested in, there are always remains of files on our device. Those files, sooner or later may conflict with other applications and our iPhone or Mac, causing a malfunction of our device.

Update or restore, the first backups

Backup to iTunes

The first thing we must do before updating any device to a new version of its operating system is to make a backup copy. 99% of the time, the process does not usually fail, but there is always that 1%.

If we have the misfortune that our device does not finish the installation process correctly, hangs or enters infinite reboot loops, we will be forced to restore our device from scratch, so we are going to lose all the information we have stored inside.

If we have taken the precaution of making a backup or have iCloud activated for all our photos and videos (which in the end is always the most important thing) there is no problem. But if not, we should know that there is no way to retrieve all that content, despite the fact that some applications claim to be able to do so.

Upgrade to iOS 13

Directly updating our device to iOS 13 is the faster method To be able to enjoy each and every one of the news that comes from this new version of iOS 13, since we only have to connect our iPhone or iPad to the charger and download and install the new version directly from the device.

Advantages

  • Much faster process.
  • We do not have to reinstall applications.
  • There is no device configuration.

Drawbacks

  • Device performance may be affected.
  • The stability of some applications can be a problem.
  • The junk files of all the applications and games that we have previously installed and deleted are kept.

Install iOS 13 from scratch

From Actualidad iPhoneWe always recommend install new versions of iOS from scratch that Apple launches every year, so we avoid dragging the possible operating problems that we may have and thus avoid problems, since we see dragging application files that are no longer on our device.

Advantages

  • No performance or stability issues, beyond apps that aren't compatible with iOS 13.
  • We eliminate all the junk files of the applications that we had installed, we had deleted or that we no longer used.

Drawbacks

  • Reinstall all applications and have to configure them.
  • It is a slow process and takes more time than directly updating to iOS 13.
  • During the first few days, the device may show battery or performance problems, until all internal management processes are normalized.

Do not restore backup

Backup to iTunes

Backup copies allow us to restore the device to the same state it was in before it stopped working. The backups that iTunes and iCloud make of our devices include all your content. In this way, without restoring our device, it will show us all the information and content that will be found on the device when we made the backup.

If we have finally chosen to do a zero installation of iOS 13, we should not restore the backup, since we would drag all the problems, present and future, that we had with iOS 12.

Apple offers us 5 GB of free storage space, and with which we can make a backup copy of our agendas, contacts, notes, health data, reminders, Safari bookmarks, passwords and little else. If we want to make a copy of our photos and videos, we must go to the checkout and hire storage space.

If we have storage space in iCloud, all the content of our device will be in the Apple cloud, so no need to make a backup, as long as all the applications we use are compatible with iCloud to store your files. Once we install iOS 13, all the content will be automatically downloaded to our terminal.

If you use the 5 GB that Apple offers for free to store the data that I mentioned in the previous paragraph and you want Restore your device from scratch without losing photos and videos, you must make a copy of them before restoring.

Extract Photos and Videos from iPhone from Windows

In order to access the images and videos that we have stored on our iPhone, we must have some version of iTunes installed, it doesn't have to be the last, since we are not going to use it.

  • We connect our iPhone to the PC and we wait for a new unit to show up on our team.
  • By clicking on that new unit, we will only access the images and videos stored on our device.
  • We just have to navigate through the different folders until find the content we want to extract.

Once you have made a copy of all the images and videos that we had on our device and we have updated to iOS 13, it is time to copy all those images and videos back to our iPhone, as long as we want to have them always at hand.

  • The process to do it is very simple and requires a computer with iTunes To do so, the computer where the images and videos that we want to copy are located.
  • Next, we connect our iPhone or iPad to the computer, open iTunes and select the device icon displayed in the app.
  • In the right column, click Photos. We check the box Sync photos and select the folder from where we want to copy the images to the iPhone.

Can you update from 0 and not lose health data?

    1.    Ignatius Hall said

Health data is stored in iCloud, along with contacts, calendar, and more. When you install from scratch, and activate iCloud, that data is downloaded automatically. It does not matter if you have the 5 Gb free than 2 TB.

Ok, Thank you very much for answering.
So if I update and put the saved copy of iCloud I can also download the errors mentioned in this article and the application files that are no longer on the device.
And when updating and restoring as a new iPhone and putting my Apple ID in it without putting the iCloud copy in it, do the contacts, calendar and health get? What I would like the most.

        Greetings.

Correct. Backup is one thing, on iCloud or iTunes. And another thing is the data stored in the cloud independently.
Within the iCloud settings, you can activate or deactivate the data you want to save (calendar, health, tasks, contacts ...). Make sure you have the Health box checked.

            Ok thanks again,

And finally then restore as a new iPhone and put my Apple id into it without putting the iCloud copy into it, do you get the contacts, calendar and health?

            Thank you again.

The data associated with that ID will be downloaded. But you have to activate iCloud for them to download. It natively activates it, but it never hurts to check it.
