With the release of iOS 13, do I update or restore from scratch?

Every year Apple releases a new version of iOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS. The iPhone, like the Mac, are the devices that can suffer the most over time in this sense, since throughout the year, we install and delete a large number of applications.

Unfortunately, when we delete the applications that we are not interested in, there are always remains of files on our device. Those files, sooner or later may conflict with other applications and our iPhone or Mac, causing a malfunction of our device.

Update or restore, the first backups

The first thing we must do before updating any device to a new version of its operating system is to make a backup copy. 99% of the time, the process does not usually fail, but there is always that 1%.

If we have the misfortune that our device does not finish the installation process correctly, hangs or enters infinite reboot loops, we will be forced to restore our device from scratch, so we are going to lose all the information we have stored inside.

If we have taken the precaution of making a backup or have iCloud activated for all our photos and videos (which in the end is always the most important thing) there is no problem. But if not, we should know that there is no way to retrieve all that content, despite the fact that some applications claim to be able to do so.

Upgrade to iOS 13

Do not restore backup

Backup copies allow us to restore the device to the same state it was in before it stopped working. The backups that iTunes and iCloud make of our devices include all your content. In this way, without restoring our device, it will show us all the information and content that will be found on the device when we made the backup.

If we have finally chosen to do a zero installation of iOS 13, we should not restore the backup, since we would drag all the problems, present and future, that we had with iOS 12.

Apple offers us 5 GB of free storage space, and with which we can make a backup copy of our agendas, contacts, notes, health data, reminders, Safari bookmarks, passwords and little else. If we want to make a copy of our photos and videos, we must go to the checkout and hire storage space.
