A 15-year-old dies in an iPhone 5c factory

Again an Apple manufacturer is being investigated for deaths in its factories and this time it is not Foxconn. No, this time Pegatron is the manufacturer making headlines thanks to the death of one of its employees working on the assembly of the iPhone 5c. The most shocking thing about the news is that the worker in question I was a teenager of just 15 years, something that is illegal in China where young people can only start working from the age of 16.

The young man died from pneumonia and had been working there for just a month before he died. Apple has been called to investigate the incident that occurred in Shanghai while a Pegatron representative declined to comment. "We are paying attention to working conditions," highlighted the representative, ensuring that factory managers and local authorities have found no problems with the employment situation or company housing.

Taking advantage of the occasion, an organization that seeks to defend workers' rights in China issued the following statement to expose the labor situation faced by those who work at Pegatron.

 While [15-year-old Shi Zhaokun] worked at the Pegatron factory assembling iPhones, the factory required its employees to work twelve hours a day. In turn, employees could only change their day or night shifts once every three months. They were even forced to work during the Chinese national day holiday.
