Apple announces Tap to Pay, which turns your iPhone into a dataphone

Apple has announced one of the novelties of the year: Tap to Pay. With this functionality, and just by installing an application on your iPhone, you can receive payments from other devicesincluding credit cards.

Get paid in businesses or receive payments from other people without the need for additional devices, that's what Apple has just announced with Tap to Pay. With a compatible iPhone (from iPhone XS onwards) and a compatible application you will be able to receive payments from anyone using the usual payment systems: credit and debit cards, other iPhones through Apple Pay and any other electronic payment system that is compatible through NFC. This new functionality comes from payment platforms such as Stripe, which will be the first to offer compatibility with Tap to Pay, and it will not be the only one because many more are expected to arrive before the end of the year.

The bad news for those of us who live outside the United States is that so far Apple has only mentioned this country in its initial launch, without announcing new additions in the immediate (or distant) future. Will this new functionality be reserved for the North American country? Let us remember that other similar functionalities such as Apple Pay Cash (now Apple Cash) and Apple's credit card, Apple Card, only work in the United States and its launch has already been several years old: Apple Pay Cash was launched in 2017 (we insist, now it's just called Apple Cash), and the Apple Card launched in 2019. Why is Apple reluctant to geographically expand these features? The expansion of Apple Pay was also quite slow (it started in 2014) and the agreements with financial entities were behind this slowness. Perhaps there are similar reasons that are preventing the expansion of the others. At the moment Tap to Pay does not have a release date but the first signs are already seen in iOS 15.4 Beta 2.
