Apple withdraws third-generation Apple TV from sale

Apple TV 6.0.2

Today we have to say goodbye to a device that was defined by the company itself as a hobby and that nevertheless evolved into an autonomous device, with its own operating system and full of possibilities: the third-generation Apple TV.

Apple has permanently discontinued the Apple TV 3. And although the news had not been announced, the truth is that the way was being prepared by the company for some time.

Apple TV 3, rest in peace

If you take a virtual tour of Apple's website today, you are probably missing something. Indeed, it is the third-generation Apple TV that no longer exists, or at least is no longer for sale. Yesterday, The Cupertino company took the step that, on the other hand, could already be seen coming and was inevitable: discontinuing the Apple TV 3.

Apple no longer sells the third generation Apple TV, it has removed it from its online store and has erased all traces of its existence. All the links on your website now lead directly to the fourth generation Apple TV. Only in its refurbished section is it possible to find some of these devices at a reduced price but of course, they are very limited units and probably, as in the case of the Spanish store, once they disappear, you will never know more about them.

The company itself has confirmed in an email sent to employees and educators and published by the 9to5Mac website that has decided to discontinue the third-generation Apple TV, while also granting some reassurance to its latest buyers by noting that all orders made so far will be duly attended. However, it is not known if the device will receive any new software updates in the near future (the last update received by the Apple TV 3 occurred last February in the form of security patches). Personally, I would already be preparing the return.

The end that we all expected

The third-generation Apple TV arrived in the company's catalog in March 2012 as an update from the previous generation. From its birth, this device was defined by the company as a hobby. To a large degree represented his foray into the world of television after having thought about, and later discarded, the idea of developing a television set. Apparently there was no way to offer the user a complete, comprehensive and novel experience of watching television, and thus the result was Apple TV.

Since the launch of the third-generation Apple TV in March 2012, it only received a slight update a year later, and it has remained so until today, being one of the company's longest-lasting products that has been on sale for four and a half years.

Now the Apple TV 3 disappears permanently. It is something that we already saw coming since the launch at the end of last year of XNUMXth generation Apple TV, a device aimed at transforming the way we watch television from top to bottom, with its own operating system (tvOS), an application store, a remote control that allows you to control television through Siri and much more. Nevertheless, Its end was accelerated when last month, the company itself made it much more difficult to find it in its online store and, at the same time, began to remove it from its store shelves.

Now the third generation Apple TV is a thing of the past, "the future of television is in the applications", as Tim Cook said a year ago, and in the new fourth generation Apple TV.
