When I was in high school to study, in a nearby bar they installed an arcade machine for the first time: Space Invaders. He was carrying 25 pesetas coins. It was quite an event. We ran a bell in class to play kill Martians on a monochrome television screen. It was unbelievable.
Two years later, in 1980, a new machine was brought to the bar: Missile Command. With an amazing sound for that time, and best of all: color screen. It was the no more. It seems that Atari is going to relaunch this game for iOS and Android this spring. Of course I will be one of the first to download it.
Atari today announced that the classic Arcade game Missile Command is coming to iOS and Android this spring. There will be a free version with advertising, or you can buy it to avoid the ads. No more in-app purchases.
It will be a new game that the company has dubbed "a modern version" of the classic arcade for mobile devices, both for Android and iOS. The game's release, called "Missile Command: Recharged," coincides with the 40th anniversary of the original game's release in 1980.
This new version maintains the same perspective of the original game, in which the missile silos fight against the entrance of rockets to protect the civil buildings. The game uses a neon-like visual design. Power-ups, an upgrade system, and an augmented reality mode have been added that projects the game into a virtual arcade room.
Missile Command: Recharged is scheduled for release shortly, without a specific day yet, for iOS, iPadOS and Android devices.
This 2020 will be a busy year for Atari. This game is nothing if we compare it with the launch of the new video game console, the Atari VCS and a new line of themed hotels that the company is planning, starting to build the first one in Phoenix, Arizona.
