Defend Jacob is based on a book and initially it was planned to be a movie. However, the showrunner in charge of bringing this project to the small screen, Mark Bomback, considered that to tell the story well, the only way to do it was through a miniseries and although there was speculation about a second season, Bomback said that it was in their plans.
