What are those holes in the white iPhone 4?

Many of us have been somewhat surprised when we have seen some holes in the upper part of the new white iPhone. Here it goes my theory about all the functions that these holes can have:

  • Brightness sensor: It is in charge of regulating the amount of light on the screen. In dark environments, the screen light is reduced so that it does not bother our eyes, while in a bright environment the brightness increases to the maximum to obtain a good reading.
  • Proximity sensor: it is in charge of turning off the screen when we make a call and thus avoid unwanted keystrokes.

These sensors have changed their position relative to the iPhone 3G / 3GS and are now located just above the listening speaker.

Why doesn't the black model of the iPhone 4 have those holes?

As with the current model (3GS or 3G), the front of the black iPhone 4 is translucent and all these sensors are hidden behind the housing as you can see in the following photo of an iPhone 3G / 3GS (to do the test with your iPhone, illuminate it with a powerful light source and you can see them without any problem):

The new white front is completely opaque because otherwise, these sensors would be visible and it would seem that instead of a front camera, they have put 4.

Therefore, it is clear that the new position of the proximity and luminosity sensors in both iPhones 4 will be the same but the black iPhone plays with the advantage of having the translucent front, so it will not be necessary to make the holes that the white iPhone does have.

Couldn't those holes be the second microphone that apple has included?

Well, for several reasons it cannot be:

  • It does not make sense to include a microphone in a place that we will cover with our face during a call.
  • As already mentioned in the entry, the black iPhone lacks these holes and does have a double microphone.

Judging from the high-quality photos that circulate on the internet, the second microphone is located right next to the 3,5mm jack.

Yes, but most of us knew about the sensors and taking a good look since the white i4 does not have the sensors like the black one is the most logical thing but it will be necessary to see if the black i4 you have them since the one in the photo is a 3g or 3gs because it is also possible that the function of the sensors has been replaced by the front camera.

Incredible that you have to modify the photo because there are people who do not notice well because it was more than clear what was being talked about.

I like black better, what do you want me to tell you, it's more elegant xD

  4.   kyokuruben said

It is a second microphone that apple has added to cancel the noise.

As a question, for the position of the front camera of the iPhone 4 with the position of the «sensors» of the iPhone 3GS, one was the proximity one, the other the luminosity and the other was always the space for the front camera (which of course it did not have) or does it have another type of sensor or what does it carry in that space?

Right Nacho, I jump to the bullfight your argument Why does the black model of the iPhone 4 not have those holes? ».
Well, I do not see anything other than the explanation that you give him ...

  7.   Luis Antonio said

    Ok, thanks nacho.

  8.   andres said

Well, those holes have the 3G and the 3GS too, not only the 4, you should see the other models so that you realize.

  9.   Nacho said

andrés, I mean the holes above the listening speaker that NO iPhone model had before. I am going to modify the photo to make it clearer. All the best!

I'm with Andres. In the 3GS that I have I also are, even a bit displaced. What happens is that to see them you have to have certain lighting conditions.

    regards

By the way, one of them is sure to be the proximity sensor, because for example with Skype you put a finger there and the screen turns off

Comrades, I have modified the entry so that you can see what holes I was referring to. I already knew I knew about the existence of these sensors in the 3G and 3GS because that is what I talk about in the entry, I say how to see them and I have even included a photo 😉

    regards!

Luis Antonio: surely the location of the sensors on the black iPhone 4 is the same as the white one (and therefore different from the 3G and 3GS) but the black one plays with the advantage of having a translucent front than the white iPhone does not have.

The microphone of the iPhone 4 one is the one that we know below next to the connector and another is apparently above next to the headphone input.

  15.   Nacho said

kyokuruben: I also thought it could be the second microphone but if you look closely, the black iPhone 4 does not have such holes so that option is ruled out. Judging from the high-quality photos, the location of the second microphone is right next to the headphone jack.

where did you get those photos from? That black iPhone does not look like the real iPhone 4 to me, and you can see clearly by two the sensor holes as they are positioned with respect to the other and well above the camera, and we also see that the camera looks totally different from the white one and the photos of the blacks that there are officers there, we also see that AT&T says which it should not since it has not yet come out.

  17.   Nacho said

Andrés: that photo is of an iPhone 3G or 3GS, I say it at the entrance and I also invite you to do the test with yours (I don't think any of them have an iPhone 4). If I have put that photo, it is to explain why the iPhone 4 does not have those holes that the white iPhone 4 does. I think it couldn't be clearer.

Isn't it a microphone for video calls? it's the most normal ...

  20.   Raul said

Is it not a microphone for video calls via Wifi? It is the most normal ... if you make a video call the microphone is right in front of you ... A clear audio ...

  21.   Mario said

It will be a microphone with audio reduction for video calls, if you want to remember, yesterday in the keynote they said that the new iphone had two microphones.

  22.   byons said

Yes! As Mario says, the earphone is next to the headphone jack, and I think it will be used only for video calls .. It is to reduce noise and hear better, since you are going to use both (the top and the bottom).

    Greetings!.

I would like to know what the holes on the side of the LANIX S700 earpiece are for.
    Thank you.,
