Important WhatsApp update: video calls are now available for everyone

WhatsApp video calls

While I was writing a tutorial so that anyone could access them even while in an unsupported country, WhatsApp has released the most important update from which he allowed us to make voice calls. Version 2.16.17 arrives with the default activation of the video calls for all users, yes, as long as they have iOS 8 or later installed. This update comes a day after the official statement who told us about WhatsApp video calls, a function that was already available in several countries where they had been activated remotely.

As I imagined, for everyone to have the possibility of making video calls, WhatsApp had to launch one update that has the function enabled by default. So it was with GIFs and so it has been with video calls. This update already makes the trick I was going to publish nonsense, which was to change our area of residence to one in which video calls were available, reinstall WhatsApp and change the area of residence again.

Video calls are activated by default WhatsApp 2.16.17

La News list that appears in the App Store is the following

  • We introduce (I imagine they mean "introduced") WhatsApp video calls. With free video calls, you can now talk face to face with your friends and family around the world. There may be charges for the use of the data service. (Requires iOS 8 or later).
  • Search for the perfect animated GIF, directly from WhatsApp. Press (+) and choose Reel. The option to search for GIFs is in the lower left.

I find especially important the notice that "there may be charges for the use of the data service." While FaceTime low video quality when we are on 3G / 4G and consumes little more than 2MB per minute, WhatsApp does not perform any management of this type and it will consume about 6MB for every minute let us video call with your app.

As usual in WhatsApp, in the list of news there is a point that was already available in previous versions. But hey, this time we can forgive him everything. From now on we no longer need to use other applications to make video calls, which can also be a bit dangerous if we have one a bit heavy among our contacts ...

And when will the integration with Apple Watch? I think there are many of us who expect this. the one that comes native today is not fully integrated.

    1.    Paul Aparicio said

Hi Cesar. Actually, the integration of WhatsApp is not that it is not completely; right now it is null, in the sense that what we have is thanks to Apple.

The downside is that the latest versions do not have any reference to the smartwatch version. So we can wait sitting down. Also, I don't know if it will be possible. I read something about that there will be no desktop application because the protocol was outdated, so I don't know if there will be an app for watches ...

      A greeting.

Thanks for the clarification Pablo. The only thing I did not understand is the second part about the desktop application ...

        1.    Paul Aparicio said

Hello again, Cesar. The current application is a reflection of what happens on the iPhone. If something happens to you, such as the multitasking management deciding that it wants to take longer to receive a notification or directly disconnect, you will not be able to do anything on a computer. If it runs out of battery, we run out of chat until about 10m pass. Nor can we send each other large files without worrying because it will reach the phone (like a disk that I would like to share with some contacts…. Ahem… MetallicA). I know that for many it may not be important, but I miss more independence.

          A greeting.

To transfer large files you have Dropbox or different services… whatsapp is a messaging app! Or do you want to take pictures with Word? No right? That's what you have the camera for! WhatsApp is what it is and does its job very well, stop wanting me to do firkadas

              Luis, totally agree.

So what is it possible to send documents for? If it is a messaging application ...

              1.    Luis said

Simple documents as an extra to complete a conversation with a document. An option that must be appreciated but that is not why they will also allow you anything that comes to mind.

              2.    Paul Aparicio said

If the documents are going to be what you want, I want to be able to send larger documents, that in this case. I also don't want to depend on the iPhone. For example, I have run out of battery and cannot chat. My router or its Wi-Fi antenna breaks and what do I do? Chat with the iPhone keyboard.

Be careful, Facebook Messenger is also a messaging application, like Telegram, Viber, Line ... They all have an independent client for the computer. What's the problem with offering a superior user experience?

I edit my message to add that just now I have connected the iPhone to the computer and it has told me that I have a new version of iOS 10.1.1. While it is updating I cannot chat on WhatsApp ...

                A greeting.

Well Pablo ... you keep using telegram with your 4 friends and the rest of the world will continue with whatsapp that despite having "few" functions we are doing great and everyone is happy.

    1.    Paul Aparicio said

Hello again, Luis. This is not topic. I use WhatsApp and if I complain it's because I want it to be even better.

When you comment that, it shows that you have not tried other messaging applications. For example, I don't use Skype, but anyone who uses it can talk from a mobile anywhere in the world or from a tablet or PC at home. If it turns out that something happens to your mobile, such as it runs out of battery, it crashes Wi-Fi or simply loses it, a Skype user will be able to continue using the other instances.

Now imagine that WhatsApp does the same. How can you deny that it would be so much better if we could always use it from any device with an Internet connection? You, like me, use WhatsApp a lot. What happens if you lose your mobile or it has any of the described problems? What will happen is that you will not be able to communicate with your contacts ... unless you use other applications. The question here is not to say "well when I fail I'll see what I do." Theirs would be that the application developers, who now work for Facebook, allow us to chat from any device without depending on another.

I honestly do not understand how you deny that a messaging application would be more complete in this way.

And well, to relax the tone a bit, although at no point do I pretend to speak in a bad way, I end this comment with another joke similar to yours: «when your cell phone breaks or something happens to you, you keep chatting ... with nobody »😉

      A greeting.

Hahaha Pablo, you were playing with the Playmobil Clips and I was already tired of using technology and chatting through IRC chats or through the later well-known Microsoft Messenger, so yes, I have tried many chat apps, the most current ones too! And I will tell you that if my phone breaks, which has happened to me only once in the last 10 years (I have used an iPhone since then) and I have been without it for 24 hours, I am left without chatting and so happy, that nobody dies for Do not chat for a couple of days and on top of that it is even good for you to realize how quiet life is without a mobile. Although in those 24 hours I had my iPad with iMessages I did not use it either, so that multiplatform for me is not so essential ... but hey, for color tastes

    1.    Paul Aparicio said

I have also used IRC (a lot), I don't know how old you think I am 😉 Starting with the webs and ending with the different IRC clients.

But you give me the answer yourself: if it breaks, you don't chat. I will not deny that disconnecting may be fine, but that is already a different issue that has nothing to do with the service that a messaging application should provide: allow us to communicate with our contacts ALWAYS (unless the service goes down; Force Majeure). You tell me that you had your iPad in those 24 hours. If you had needed it, and answer me honestly, wouldn't you have preferred to have the possibility of being able to chat from the iPad as well? I just can't believe the answer is no.

For me it is important and that is why I wrote it (and I will write it again in the future). That, for example, something that happened to me recently: I'm in a group preparing a surprise for a friend's birthday, a new version of iOS comes out, I update it and… OH! The desktop version I am using does not work for me for a quarter of an hour. I can not believe that that can not give you courage and you do not prefer to change it, honestly. Yes, I am partly to blame for giving it an update without thinking about it, but it is what writing in technology blogs has, that you have to try everything before anyone else. Of course, in Telegram it did not happen to me ... I only put Telegram as an example of how it could be that of being able to use WhatsApp anywhere without ties. And I confess that I only use it for a work group. What I would like is that WhatsApp was better because everyone uses it.

      A greeting.

Stop fucking around and chat privately who is older or more nerdy. The fact is that WhatsApp offers the current, who does not like to be sent to move. And I agree that if you are going to send documents go to Dropbox, neither Guasap is going to be the 'all in one' that works perfectly, if it can barely with itself.

And for when something as basic as being able to put custom tones uploaded from itunes or itools? It is incredible that they continue with the same tones and do not even allow to choose and put the one that one wants ...
