That happens when you download a firmware different from that of your device (it does not have to do with the signature), for example you download iOS 8.1 for iPhone 6 Plus having your iPhone 6. There are basically two communication standards, if your phone has sim (or micro sim / nano sim, etc) you have GSM if not you have CDMA (these do not use SIM).
