Apple could have sold about 600.000 HomePods in the first quarter of the year

Apple never breaks down the number of devices it sells of each model it has for sale in the market, it only offers us global sales figures for iPhone, iPad and Mac. Since the Apple Watch hit the market in 2015, the Cupertino-based company has never provided sales figures for this device. The same goes for the HomePod.

By not offering official figures, analysts are forced to juggle to calculate the approximate number of units. According to these, the Apple Watch is the smartwatch that are selling the most around the world, not counting the market for smart bracelets. Regarding the HomePod, we are in the same case, without official data. But if we listen to analysts, HomePod sales have been about 600.000 units during the first quarter of the year.

These 600.000 units represent 6% of total global sales within the smart speaker category, behind Amazon, Google and Alibaba. According to Strategy Analytics, Amazon has put 4 million Amazon Echo in its different versions on the market, taking 43,6% of the market, while Google has sold 2.4 million Google Home models, which represents 26,5 % From the market.

The Asian giant Alibaba is ahead of Apple with 700.000 units sold while Xiaomi is in charge of closing the classification with 200.000 units. The main one affected by the arrival of alternatives has been Amazon, the first to arrive in this market in 2014, in terms of market share, since in terms of number of units, it has managed to double that number, going from 2 million units sold in the first quarter of 2017 to the 4 million units sold in the first quarter of 2018.

However, Google has grown by 700%, from selling 300.000 units in the first quarter of 2017 to sell 2.4 million in the first quarter of 2018. Both Amazon and Google dominate the market with a 70% share, which is logical considering the price of the models offered by these manufacturers, a price very far from that offered by the HomePod, Except for the Google Home Max model, which is more expensive than Apple's HomePod.
