Apple Gets Rifle Emoji Removed From Unicode 9

Rifle Emoji

The emoji that will be part of Unicode 9 had already been introduced and accepted, but it looks like there will be at least one last minute change. Among the new emoji must have been the Rifle emoji, an icon that, as you can imagine, showed a new weapon. But the recent Orlando killings have prompted Apple to refuse to support this new icon, and later Unicode modified its plans and removed two new Emoji's.

The second emoji that was going to arrive in Unicode 9 and that we will not finally see is the modern Pentathlon. The problem is that this emoji also includes a gun, as you can see in the following image. Apple was the one who raised the most objections, especially regarding the rifle emoji, but Microsoft joined the complaints of those of Cupertino and it seems that there is no going back.

Pentathlon Emoji

Neither the Rifle Emoji nor the Pentathlon will make it to Unicode 9.0

According to sources in the room, Apple began the discussion of removing the rifle emoji, which had already passed the code process for the June Unicode 9.0 release. Apple told the consortium that it would not offer support for a rifle on its platforms and asked that an emoji not be made.

Although the rifle and pentathlon emoji will not arrive with the rest of the emojis of Unicode 9.0, the debate is on the table. On the one hand, it is clear that it is worth not encouraging this type of violence but, on the other hand and as the pentathlon emoji shows, weapons are also used in sport. In addition, there is already an emoji with a gun and another with a bomb. In any case, if I have to choose, I think it is better if there are no weapons. How do you see it?
