Twins, Apple Pay and other doubts about Face ID clarified by Apple

With a month to go before we can reserve the iPhone X, there are still many doubts about its new facial unlocking system. Despite the fact that we already saw a lot of evidence right after the keynote for the presentation of the new device at the press event, many users are still suspicious of this new system used to how well Touch ID works.

Aware of these doubts in the media and users, Apple seems convinced to make us know all the details of the new Face ID even before we have our iPhone X in our hands, and for this reason it has published a document in which it clarifies some of the most frequent doubts about how this new technology is going to work.

We already know that in addition to Face ID we will always have the alternative of the traditional unlock code. This code, which will coexist with Face ID in the same way that it now coexists with Touch ID, will be mandatory in the following situations:

• When the device restarts
• When we have tried up to five times to use facial unlocking without success
• When the device has not been unlocked in the last 48 hours
• When we have not used the unlock code for 156 hours and we have not unlocked the device through Face ID for 4 hours
• When we have locked the device remotely
• When we have launched the shutdown or emergency screen (by pressing the side button and the volume button for 2 seconds)

Apple also insists again that Face Id is more secure than Touch ID, with a one in a million chance that someone can unlock your device using Face ID (1: 50.000 for Touch ID). Many wonder what will happen between twin brothers, and Apple also clarifies it by ensuring that in the case of twin brothers or even very similar siblings there may be confusion, as well as among young people under 13 years of age who do not yet have their facial features well defined. In these cases, Apple recommends using the numeric password, something that is a step back from Touch ID.

Doubts about how to use Apple Pay have also appeared these days. Until now, it was enough to bring the iPhone close to the payment terminal so that it automatically detected the operation and Apple Pay appeared, identifying our fingerprint to authorize the payment. Now it will be different, more similar to how the Apple Watch works, since you will have to press the side button twice to launch Apple Pay, look at our iPhone to authorize the payment through Face ID and then bring it to the payment terminal.
