The Cupertino guys released iOS 12.5 in mid-December, an update so that older iPhones (prior to iPhone 6s) could make use of the new notification system for exposure to the coronavirus that both Google and Apple they had introduced months ago in their operating systems.
It is striking that Apple took so long to launch this update for older iPhone models, since it has always been characterized by taking maximum care of this aspect. Google, added this system of exposure notifications in all Android together through an update of Google services, so for months, It is available on terminals managed by Android 6 onwards.
Specifically, the iPhone and iPad models that this new update can install are:
- iPad Air
- iPad mini 2
- iPad mini 3
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 6
- 6 iPhone Plus
- iPod touch 6th generation.
In the release notes, Apple states that it has fixed an issue where exposure notifications they incorrectly displayed the language of the registration profile.
Are exposure notifications used?
In Spain the use of the application is practically nil. And not because it doesn't work, but because there are many users who, when testing positive for coronavirus, had to enter a code, a code that took days to get, as long as they got it.
To that, we have to add the typical conspiracy theories in which it is stated that through the application the government of the day could know at all times where we are.
To these theories, we have to add that the government has not done any information campaign on the operation of the application and incidentally, disprove these theories. A missed opportunity, at least in Spain.
It does not work because no one wants to say that they have been infected, each one goes to his own way and the important thing is "if I get infected, you too". There have been massive tests to see who has the virus so that they do not infect people and not even half of the people have gone. Others who have been confined and you see them walking quietly down the street. This is Spain. We have what we deserve.
