Apple Watch Series 6 (PRODUCT) RED, unboxing and first impressions

Without shyness, a red that attracts attention

I have to admit that I like the color red, and also that whenever I can I choose (PRODUCT) RED products, because I like the color and because a small part of what I have paid goes to help the fight against AIDS. There is no doubt that this new color will generate love and hate in equal parts. For many it will be a very striking color, for others a perfect color to use daily. We had been waiting for a long time for Apple to decide to launch a watch in bright colors, and finally it has been decided. Now you just need an iPhone 12 Pro Max in red to have the perfect combination.

This color can only be chosen on the sports Apple Watch, with the aluminum case. This means that the glass is made of Ion-X, a less scratch-resistant material than sapphire in steel models, but it was something I didn't mind giving up in order to get this new color. In return, it is a more shock-resistant material, something more suitable in a sports model. It is the LTE model, although in this color it will be impossible to differentiate it because the red ring on the crown that characterizes these models does not exist here.

There are no more design changes from the Apple Watch Series 4 or 5. We continue with a rectangular smartwatch, which is not a problem at all. It is not only the best way to take advantage of a screen, but by now the design of the Apple Watch has become an icon of the industry, imitated until boring. Of course, the crown is not missing, a detail that Apple used from the first model as a tribute to conventional watches, but which in addition to being a characteristic aesthetic element serves to navigate through the menus and use the electrocardiogram that it has carried with us since the Series 4, and that of course is present in this Series 6.

To complete this (PRODUCT) RED Apple has added a sport loop in the same color that cannot be purchased separately, and that it is a small variant of the previous model of the same material but that was red throughout, while now it has the edges in another color. I would have liked to buy it with the Solo Loop braided in red, but it is not available yet so we will have to wait to buy it.

A good handful of news

Although for many the aesthetic changes are the only important ones, Apple has decided that its novelties are not very visible, but they are important. The most important change is undoubtedly the new sensor to measure oxygen in the blood, one more step to follow the important path that this smartwatch has taken focusing on the health of its users. Now not only will it warn us if our heartbeats are faster than necessary, or if it detects atrial fibrillation, but it will also measure the oxygen in our blood, an important piece of information for our respiratory health. These measurements will be made without our realizing it, such as heart rate, but we can also carry out manual measurements whenever we want. This new oxygen sensor has made the bottom of the Apple Watch completely different from previous models, with the four sensors for heart rate and another four new sensors for oxygen saturation.

Of course, this new generation of Apple Watch is accompanied by a new S6 processor, an adaptation of the A13 sensor of the iPhone 11 that makes this Apple Watch more powerful, fast and efficient, which allows the screen is 2,5 times brighter than its predecessor, something that is appreciated when you look at the screen in bright sunlight. Remember that this screen also has the option of always remaining on, to be able to see it without lifting your wrist. The screen is still the same size as in the Series 4 and 5, in this particular model, 44mm. Something that is also always active now is the altimeter, to see if this way the Appel Watch measures well at once the floors that you have climbed in a day.

The charging speed of the Apple Watch has also been improved. We do not have a fast charge that gives us 50% battery in half an hour, but we can say that we are more or less close because the Apple Watch recharges 20% faster, which means that the battery recharges up to 80% in an hour, and fully in an hour and a half. This is really subtle to be able to wear the Apple Watch while we sleep, and thus monitor our sleep and use it as an alarm clock, since if you leave it on the charger for an hour while you have dinner you will have more than enough to last until the next night without the battery you run out. The bad news is that the autonomy has not been increased, so we will have to continue recharging our watch daily, like our iPhone.

Speaking of bad news, in case you did not see Apple's presentation, I remind you that this Apple Watch model does not include a USB charger. Yes, we have the cable with the charging disk, it is also a USB-A cable (the usual one), and that means that you will have to look for a charger that you have in a drawer, and that is not the one for the iPhone 11 Pro, because it won't work for you. Including a USB-C cable would have been controversial because many users would have complained, but in my opinion it would have been the most coherent movement. Apple has lost the opportunity to unify all its chargers, we will have to wait another year, or buy a USB-C cable for € 35.

And also watchOS 7

All that we have said are exclusive functions of the Apple Watch Series 6, but we must also include all the changes that watchOS 7 brings, which are not few. Sleep mode has become my favorite alarm, much less intensive than the iPhone, thus preventing the whole house from waking up when I have to wake up at six in the morning. The new spheres have also risen to the top of my favorite spheresThe GMT sphere is the one I like the most of all, although the Memoji sphere that you can make from your own Apple Watch is a success with the little ones.

Moving forward without risking

Apple continues to make decisive steps forward with its Apple Watch. We could have asked for total independence from the iPhone, a week-long battery, or a complete redesign after five generations of smartwatch, and surely any of these features would have been fine. However, the Apple Watch is a well established product, and Apple's roadmap seems determined to take small steps that do not pose a risk, which on the other hand would be unnecessary. The new colors or the blood oxygen sensor may not be enough for many, who will keep the Apple Watch they currently have, but for others who can join the Apple ecosystem, or who continue to maintain their Series 0, 1, 2 o 3. In addition, Apple has discreetly lowered the price of its smartwatch. The sports Apple Watch in aluminum has a starting price of € 429 (40mm) and € 459 (44mm), with the LTE models being € 100 more expensive.
