Apple will make changes to Search to prevent misuse of its AirTags

Since the launch of the AirTag, this small accessory has become a bestseller due to its tremendous utility. But also it has become a problem due to the misuse that some are giving it. Apple has already announced changes to prevent this.

Apple's Find Network is a fantastic invention to avoid losing your devices and any other accessories you add an AirTag to. Using the entire network of Apple devices to locate any missing Apple devices is a great idea, as is Launch. A small tracker like the AirTag that we can put on our keys, wallet, backpack, etc.. But as with any good invention, misuse is also being the protagonist of worrying events for the brand, such as using AirTags to follow people. Apple has been working on fixing this problem for some time and has already announced changes to the way its Search network works.

New privacy notices

Apple has noted that with an upcoming software update coming soon, everyone who sets up an AirTag will see a message clearly stating it is indicated that it is a device to locate objects, not people. This message will also remind you that any AirTag that is configured will be associated with the iCloud account of its owner, and that the authorities can request this data if necessary.

Enhanced alerts

Notifications received on the iPhone when a device is detected near them they will receive improvements. Now when our iPhone detects a device that sends its location near our iPhone we receive a message that tells us that "an unknown device" has been detected. That device could be some AirPods that have been left us, or that someone has forgotten in the car seat, but that is not indicated.

As of an upcoming update Apple notes that these alerts will be clearer and will identify exactly the accessory you are talking about. In this way we will be able to know if that accessory has really been forgotten, has been loaned to us or has been placed on us to follow us, for example an AirTag.

Precision search improvements

Improvements to AirTag precision finding have also been announced. When we are close enough to one, thanks to the U1 chip, we can know exactly where the locator is by using precision search. Right now this only works with our AirTags, not with those that we can find and are of another owner. Soon Apple will change this and also will allow us to do it with other AirTag so that if we are told that there is one nearby we can find it more easily.

AirTag sound changes

When an AirTag is away from its owner for several hours (between 8 and 24 hours, Apple does not specify more). An upcoming update will not only make a sound but also iPhone receives an alert where users can ask to repeat the sound or use precise search to find the AirTag. In addition, the sound of the AirTag will improve with higher tones.
