Bittersweet Keynote: the Apple Watch is not a mass product

Gold Apple Watch

We have always known that Apple and cheap products are incompatible terms, that if you include them in the same sentence then the computer crashes and forces you to restart it. This has been and will continue to be so, but because of how today's keynote started, I had a good feeling.

The announcement of the Apple TV price drop It was the first omen, then came the new MacBook that you may like more or less, but it is a work of art for the engineering world. Its price, although in line with Apple, does not seem crazy to me for everything it offers behind, however, the Apple Watch has reminded me of the same situation I experienced when the iPhone 5c was launched: indifference.

I have never been a good friend of wearables that are connected to the mobile, if you have one in your possession and receive notifications frequently, you will know what I am talking about although it is not relevant. Even so, I really wanted to give the entry version of the Apple Watch a try But after seeing today's keynote, it is clear to me that this watch is not a mass product.

Apple Watch Collection

I really like the watch as a product. That integration with the iPhone has a lot of potential to explode but is it worth what it costs? $ 400 for the men's sports version is something to think about, but as we scale editions with the different straps, the price goes up exponentially until reaching $ 17.000, yes, $ 17.000.

The gold edition may try to sell exclusivity so I don't question the price there. Exclusivity is worth what people are willing to pay for it And precisely for that reason, there are Ferraris, Hublots and other brands that sell that, exclusivity accompanied by a quality product.

The problem is that the Apple Watch is full of shortcomings as a watch and as a gadget. You will like your design more or less, your bracelets may cost more or less but if we focus on its role as a watch, right now it leaves me a bittersweet taste. Its autonomy of 18 hours is insufficient and not being able to submerge it in water makes it a delicate product to forget that we wear it on our wrist, it requires constant, daily, permanent attention.

Then there is the issue of aging. Time will pass and like all technological products, there will come a day when it gets out of date, in which your small battery has lost capacity and no longer lasts 18 hours, it lasts only 14 hours because we are charging it daily. The day will come when it stops updating and finally, the day will come when it is completely useless because it no longer turns on, forcing us to replace its battery with a new one, assuming that it does not have to go through the Apple Store and leave more profitable to buy a new one.

Omega Speedmaster

This is applicable to the iPhone, the MacBook, iPad, I know but this is a watch and no matter how smart it is, there are some minimums that should be met. It can be conformist but we are talking about that if you go a weekend of travel and forget the charger of the Apple Watch, you will have a completely useless accessory on your wrist, that if, at least 400 dollars although if you like the version on a steel bracelet, the figure is $ 1.000.

I have no shares in Apple so the success or failure of the Apple Watch does not influence me, however, vI get that feeling again from when the iPhone 5c was introduced. This is a good product, with a lot of potential but because of the price, or better, the value for money, it is not going to become a mass product. Like Apple has never intended it to be and this is nothing more than a tantrum on my part. Maybe I like watches too much and the work behind many of them, costing less than the Apple Watch and being able to be inherited by your grandchildren.

At this point, I just hope that the Android Wear compatibility with iOS is coming soon Because having watches of the size of the Moto 360 for 200 euros seems more interesting to me.

What do you think? Do you think the Apple Watch will be a success or its price will mean a new failure?

Great, great I really liked your analysis, great article! In part you are right and the cost is a bit high, where it was for 250 or 300 would be fine (speaking of the Sport version). I think Apple has created a great watch but because of its price not many will want it. Great article!

    1.    Nacho said

Thanks Juan, I think like you. A price of $ 250 or $ 300 would have made a difference, but we knew the minimum was $ 349. Too bad the larger version is even more expensive. I do not comment on the rest of the editions because for me none of them is worth what Apple asks for them. Greetings!

Juer ... is that with this price it is more to account to tie an iphone on your wrist, for this price I prefer an ipad, honestly ...

Congratulations on the note, I think it is a good analysis. Regarding the Apple Watch, it is very expensive for most of us mortals. But apparently there will always be someone who wants it and can buy it at those exorbitant prices, Apple lives on that and we have realized it. Greetings.

Very good article!! The Apple watch is going to hit it like the 5c. Very beautiful but infinitely expensive and I do not know what it is for if you do not care about sports! In addition, we must not forget that in two years it will be obsolete and paying that pasta for two years seems like outrageous! They will know…

Honestly, in the world of watchmaking I am totally out of the loop, but I love technology, and, after a brief search on the internet, I have found the odd watch, rolex, which, with the same characteristics of the apple watch (steel , sapphire and link strap), it costs well over € 1.000. Not to mention some gold ...

Ok they are ETERNAL, but can someone explain to me what a classic watch brings?

It is not irony, I look for the answer.

Using logic, it is not better to pay € 1.000 for a watch that allows you to make payments, home automation, communicate, measure your activity, etc. That one that only gives me the time, ah, and prestige (which is often criticized about apple products).

I'm not saying that it seems cheap to me, but looking at how the "gram of hour" is in the watch industry I think they are not very disoriented, the three editions are in line with what the market refers to, with the difference of not being a watch May it last forever to give you only the hour.

I'm wrong? surely, reason to me and we talk about it. THANK YOU!!!

In this life, any product can reach exorbitant prices and watches were not going to be less. Its price cannot really be justified, it is what I spoke of exclusivity and if you add a few units to that, made by hand and high jewelry materials, the price shoots up to amounts that are difficult to assimilate.

I am not going that far, the Omega that I have put in the post costs much less than many of the Apple Watch and it is quite a gentleman watch.

In any case, the Apple Watch does not allow you to do anything that you have set without depending on the iPhone, basically because it needs it since it cannot do it by itself. Greetings!

Good article. I fully agree with what it explains in it. With the price Apple has thrown itself into the pool head first, and that is not waterproof. It is too much money for what it is and offers. And autonomy is insufficient to ask for so much money. Another fiasco like the 5C? Time will tell.

  12.   incom2 said

I agree on almost everything, but I think you also have to keep in mind that wearables are in their infancy right now. As in diapers as those ancient, very expensive, exclusive wind-up watches, that had to be ROPED every day (wink, wink), that they could not get wet, that a bad blow and the nuts came loose (literally), that had to be take the watchmaker over time because the mechanism had to be greased or else the rope would lose effectiveness and wear out earlier (new XDD wink). Etc.

The Apple Watch like almost all other smartwatches suffers from the same as those first watches: they have to be charged every day, it does not get along with water, the price is high, and it requires maintenance than the most modern evolved successors of those first watches (quartz mechanism, batteries that last for years, several atmospheres submersible ...) no longer need. It is necessary to mentalize that an Apple Watch like the others, will have to be treated with some affection, that the "rope" will have to be greased over time so that it remains effective and that, of course, successors will emerge that in a short time will exponentially improve performance until reaching a level of maturity as I said of traditional watches that last for years with a single battery and without visiting the watchmaker at all.

That does not mean that Apple always pulls towards prohibitive prices whatever the technology is, that the hype and exclusivity that surrounds the brand serves to boost the sales of some products that other brands would not sell as well or would be a failure, and that all (with the exception of the Pebble) are determined to put the more the better, when neither the batteries nor even the miniaturization (they are almost all blocks on the wrist) are still mature enough.

    a greeting

    1.    Nacho said

I really like your point of view and agree with it. The problem is that the world of technology is cruel and while today you are at the top, tomorrow not. A company like Apple cannot have faults and if it does, the second generation will be the one to answer for them.

I close the doors to this first edition of the Apple Watch but if its deficiencies disappear in the next one, I don't mind giving it that pending opportunity. I already say that I like it a lot and I see potential in it but not at any price.

Hopefully if this Apple Watch has to be wound every day (wink, wink), the next one will become an automatic (wink, wink). XD

      Regards!

I think exactly the same as your Nacho. I see a lot of potential in this Apple Watch but I think it still has big shortcomings. One of them, and the most serious, is its price. Great post! I haven't seen one this good here in a while, and I'm a daily follower. Congratulations and greetings to the entire team Actualidad iPhone.

That price is a shit, it is understood that it is gold and luxury must be paid, but it is absurd to spend that on a watch that in a year will be obsolete and will be released on the 2nd, when for that money you buy a good gold watch from a good signature which will be for life 😊

The iPhone 5c was not a failure, although it did not meet the expectations that people had made about how cheap it was going to be, it had many sales, it was one of the best-selling terminals.

It was not a failure, I insist.

    nanit 🙂

    1.    Nacho said

If the iPhone 5c has not met people's expectations, it is because it has been a failure. If it had done as well in sales as you say, Apple would have renewed it with an iPhone 6c.

That he has sold many units during a month in I do not know what territory (United Kingdom wants to sound to me) does not free him from being a failure in the rest. I insist, Apple would have renewed it if it had been so well received as you say.

      Regards!

They have exaggerated with the price, if it is about watches there are many and better, it is not a Rolex to pay $ 17,000.
Time will tell if they were right or wrong, but for my part I am not going to buy it.

Well, do you think that everyone will buy the new macbook? Many will want it but they will not be able to buy it, if Apple takes out a TV or a car, surely many will want it and not everyone could buy it, currently and in the past it also happened, many wanted Apple products but they could not buy it or they cannot, do you think i would change with elo watch? In my case, I will buy the watch, I only use a watch when I exercise to keep track of time, but this watch would not fall well because I currently use many things from Apple and I want that connectivity that they offer me.

    1.    Nacho said

Hello, I am not talking about being able to buy the product based on whether you have the money or not, I am saying that even having it, it is not worth the purchase at all. Greetings!

      1.    andres said

I do not think it is not worth buying, since most of the functions were known since they presented it last year, what did you expect that it would cost $ 100 or that it would shoot laser beams?

This is an excellent post for me. From my point of view, the new Watch is excessively expensive and I am not referring to the Edition. I think Apple shouldn't have bet so much on its first edition of this smartwatch; if not, he should only have released the first two without the Edition. They wanted to enter the wide and sophisticated world of watchmaking with everything, but I think it will be what the iPhone 5C was. I will wait for the second edition in which it is against the water and the pile will tell you at least 2 or 3 days. It makes me ridiculous to charge it daily, I have enough with the iPhone and its limited battery. I said 🙂

I was fascinated by your point of view of the post. the Apple Watch is too expensive for me. I think that paying more than 6 or 7 thousand pesos for a gadget of this type, that after a year they will launch another "improved" one and in 3 it will be obsolete, makes me something very out of place.
I consider myself a big fan of watches, and in my personal view, smart watches have never caught my attention, I love traditional watches, they are something very intimate and personal for me, I never leave home without one. However, I bet you that for what the stainless steel Apple Watch with a Milanese strap costs, it is enough, at least in Mexico, to buy a Mido Commander (it has Milanese mesh as a characteristic stamp) yes, the Mido costs about 10 thousand weights, but the differences are very large. Common watches last for years and never go out of style. It probably won't do even half of what the great Apple Watch "does", however, it will not go out of style, it will resist water, its parts will be replaceable and most importantly, you will never have to charge it, since it is automatic, as well as that it will be something that you can inherit to your children or grandchildren, an example of that, the one I have, was a very special gift from my grandfather and is more than 26 years old and continues to function as yesterday. I think the Apple Watch can't give you that. I have not really fallen into buying a Smart Watch, because I think we have enough of having everything digital and automated in addition to laptops, iPhones, Tablets, etc. as if to carry an extension of them on the wrist. But I already strayed from the topic; I understand that the quality of Apple in everything it does is highly recognizable, however, I think prices have been exceeding lately, I never thought that a cell phone could cost 18,000 pesos (iPhone 6 Plus 128GB) at least here in Mexico, which, I admit to being a big fan of Apple and everything they do, but the costs are a bit ridiculous.
I happened to be chatting with a friend the other day who is a fan of all things gold (and watches too) and began to inquire about the Apple Watch Edition, and came to the conclusion that the price is grossly excessive for be an 18 carat gold pot And that after 3 years will be obsolete, also, from a personal point of view, I think that no Apple Watch will be able to match, the prestige, the machinery, the elegance, the image or the precision of a traditional watch, be it an Audemars Piget, a Rolex, Frederique Constatin, Hublot, Invicta or any other. Gadgets will be gadgets and will go out of style. The watches do not.

    1.    Nacho said

Touché, it is clear that you like watches. 😀

I have a doubt because everyone talks about the future, maybe they already know that next year Apple is going to release a new watch, I am inclined to think that they will have it for two years and they will release a second version because now they have to think about a new phone a A new iPad a new watch and who knows what other businesses are involved in are many things that they want to cover and in the end neither one nor the other I think they will be patient and wait for technology to advance to release a second version is what I think. Nowadays, yes, it is expensive, yes, I do not deny it, but we all already know how to work in this company little but surely

I quite like it, the only problem is that it does not have a tachometer. Still I like its design is 25 gems, it runs at 28,800.00 vpm. It will cost me 1600 euros.
