Connect your iphone to the internet without wifi

Thanks to our friends at Foroiphone.com I found this curious tutorial perfectly explained to be able to connect the iPhone to the internet without having Wi-Fi at home, we only need a few small prerequisites, which are:

  • Internet connection (router, cable modem, ...)
  • Laptop with Windows XP and WiFi (connected to the internet by cable)
  • An iPhone / iPod Touch

Processing:

We have the laptop connected to the Internet by cable, and working of course, we are going to Home/ Control panel / Network connections:

  • If our router DO NOT has the address 192.168.0.1 (Since Windows tries to use it and if it has it, it will fail ...): Right button about wired network connection -> Properties -> TCP / IP protocol -> Advanced Options -> we mark Allow users of other networks to connect through the Internet connection of this computer, and uncheck Allow users of other networks to control or disable shared Internet connection.
  • If our router SI has the address 192.168.0.1: We select both connection icons (WiFi and cable connection) -> Right button about selection -> Create network bridge, this will create a network bridge between both connections, as seen in the following image:

    • Once the connection is shared or the bridge is made, we will create a connection Wi-Fi ad hoc (connection between two devices) to be able to connect the iPhone / iPodTouch, for this we are going to Home/ Control panel / Network connections -> Right button about WiFi connection -> Properties -> Wireless Networks tab -> Add button en Preferred networks, here we will configure the network name (SSID) the type of Encryption (Yes you can WPA better than WEP, much more secure) and we put the key that we want to use for the connection.
    • We mark the box: This is a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network. Wireless access points are not used
    • We accept and we will have the Ad-Hoc network ready, now we just have to go to iPhone / iPodTouch -> Settings (Settings) -> WiFi -> if it appears we can use the quick configuration, otherwise we will Other… and we configure it (Name, type of encryption and key), we accept and check that you assign us an IP address, it may take a few seconds

We should already have an Internet connection in our iPhone / iPodTouch

If you explore the networks that you have available in Windows you will see something like this:

When you are going to use the laptop's WiFi connection to connect to a network, you will have to undo the network bridge so that it lets you configure it and use it, for that Right button on the network bridge -> Delete.

Well ... my question is what is this for? In other words, we will continue to use WIFI and only what we have done will be instead of connecting to the wifi router or access point, we connect using a shared internet connection that is shared through an ad-hoc network between the iphone and the laptop or pc with wifi ...

The only utility would be in case the router we have is not wifi ... little more

Mmmm Daniel seems to me that this is what you comment on all that in case you don't have a Wi-Fi router.

    Hello,

I think I do everything right but when I connect the ipod to the computer and I get wrong ips, something like 169.254.76.26, which is not the IP range of the connection at all.
If I remove DHCP and set it fixed, it still doesn't give me internet access.
    do you know why?

    thank you very much
