Customize the sound of iPhone SMS

sms_tuto.jpg

Today I bring you this tutorial with which you can change the sounds of the SMS that the iPhone brings by default. The process is a little longer than the one we usually use to create ringtones and, in addition, it requires that our iPhone has the Jailbreak carried out:

INTRODUCTION :

The first thing we have to know is that the ringtones that the iPhone uses as SMS have the «.caf» format and cannot exceed 30 seconds in duration, so, we are going to see how to convert a song and then upload it to the phone .

Screenshot 2010-09-05 at 22.43.14.png

POINT 1:
We launch iTunes and access the program's preferences. In the "General" tab there is a button in which we can read "Import settings" and which we must press. Once we have entered, we have to change the encoding to use and select "AIFF Encoding". The Adjustment is left by default in the "Automatic" option. Our configuration would be as shown in the following image:
Screenshot 2010-09-05 at 22.47.08.png

POINT 2:
Now we go back to our iTunes library and select the song from which we want to make the ringtone. You already know that we can only listen to 30 seconds of that song.
Screenshot 2010-09-05 at 22.51.24.png

POINT 3:
Once the song is selected, we right-click on its title and choose the option "Get information" that will appear in the drop-down menu. Next we access the options tab:

POINT 4:
In the previous menu we will choose the exact moment in which the tone begins (start) and ends (end). Remember that the period of time between the beginning and the end should not exceed 30 seconds. When everything is done, press the accept button.
POINT 5:
If everything went well, we should be back in our library and with the selected song. Right-click on it again and select the option from the drop-down menu that says "Create AIFF Version".

POINT 6:
Now we have to locate the track that has been created. In my case, it is located inside the iTunes Music folder. If you can't find it, use SPOTLIGHT or the Windows search engine. Once found, you will realize that its extension is ".aif" while we wanted the ".caf" so we have to use a program (or the operating system itself) to be able to change one extension for another.

POINT 7:
Now the difficult begins. We need an SFTP client to access the iPhone file system (on Mac you can use Cyberduck and in Windows WinSCP, for example). Once we have access to the terminal, we have to go to the following route:
System / Library / Audio / UISounds /
In it we will find the sounds that the iPhone uses for its main tasks, although we are only interested in the sounds for the SMS.
POINT 8:
The files that contain the sounds of the SMS are 6 and have the following form:
  • sms-received1.caf
  • sms-received2.caf
  • sms-received3.caf
  • sms-received4.caf
  • sms-received5.caf
  • sms-received6.caf

I recommend that you make backup copies of these files and then play with your custom ringtones at will, although remember that for the iPhone to recognize them, the name of the custom ringtone must match the name of the ringtone used by the iPhone. For example, if I want my song to use the third place in the SMS tone, I will rename it as follows:

Screenshot 2010-09-05 at 23.11.50.png

POINT 9:

Once our song has been renamed, it only remains to drag the tone from our desktop to the correct path of the iPhone. It will ask us if we want to overwrite the file and we will have to say yes.

If everything has gone well, when we go to the Settings> Sound section of our iPhone, we can select the new tones for the SMS that we have entered.

The tutorial is perfect, so as not to go looking around, not being able to customize the sounds of the iPhone with total ease is something that I have never understood and that I have never liked, not because of me because even when I used Nokia I used the Nokia tune, but the mere fact of knowing that it cannot be done easily ... There are people who will not be amused. For my part, I use the marimba (marimba rule's) and for SMS the 1up sound of the super Mario bros with winterboard, since the default sound there was no way to hear it xD and Mario's is amazing. As I said, I am not those who like to carry the last hit of the top 40 on their mobile phones, even Apple intends to end that because the truth is I do not see an iPhone sounding with the typical regeton at full speed xD

I've been wanting to get effect-type sounds for a long time, so it's not music. I would like to put sounds of this type in sms, or even in calls, is it possible to find it somewhere? everything is very focused on music ...

Hello everyone, I take advantage of the fact that there is talk of sounds to mention the best quality of the apple's signature, which is sound. Putting on the headphones with the music that one likes, be it ipod .. Of any generation ... Iphone ... Whatever .. It is more or less to be in heaven in life .. I think that is what captivates me These people and I did not know the brand, yes, I was struck by a device with 20 gigs of music storage when someone bragged about a player and boasted of having 1 GIGA OF MEMORY and this gossip said 20 and nobody believed it ... But When I got to know the device, it was my inseparable companion AND ON TOP IT WAS LOADED LIKE A MOBILE, I've never been a fan of anything I don't like but the ipod classic they call now fascinated me .. Not to mention the speed of searching for songs. Anyway, I think that although many people are sorry and respect everyone, these devices have no comparison with anything physical-electronic-material that I have ever seen. It is a reflection.

You may just not have read it but .. you don't need Jailbreak for that? I used to do it (With Jailbreak and ssh installed on the iphone) But I just installed a cydia program called AnyRing and the truth is that you avoid the process of converting the tone, cutting it and changing the format .. and you can use any song you have in the itunes library .. direct from the phone .. highly recommended ...

    Hello Jorge,

I completely agree with you. I connect my Iphone 4 to the car, I put the iPod to play all the music in my library and it is a joy. The sound is much cleaner than with CD or USB and it also seems that its equalizer works wonders. I am very happy and I recommend it 100% if only for that.

……… .. what has become of those years of the Walkman? Hahaha

    regards
    Frank

Kobain have you noticed that what anyring does is activate the ipod and play the song that you tell him when they call you? Now I don't know how the subject will be, but before it was an ordeal, it was fatal ...

I did the tutorial, but the tones have to be 2 seconds ... higher than that, it does not play !! I think they should improve this, nothing like listening to your favorite song or some joke when a message arrives….

And why does it need to be jailbroken? Where do you need it? I did not understand that part

    Thank you.
