La fullfilment of security requirements It is essential for our platforms and services to be safe. That is why when we choose one or the other platform we take into account what level of protection and privacy it offers us. Every day there are thousands of hackers trying to bypass these protection barriers and, sometimes, they manage to overcome them.
This is the case of Flipboard, the RSS manager. A few hours ago he confirmed that they had suffered cyber attacks on different dates to their databases getting the extraction of usernames, passwords and emails, among other data. The manager assures that they have hired an external company to detect the leak and increase the security of their systems.
One more hack to an endless list: Flipboard's turn
In response to this discovery, we immediately launched an investigation and a third-party security company was hired to assist us. The results of the investigation indicate that between June 2, 2018 and March 23, 2019 and April 21 and 22, 2019, an unauthorized person gained access to some databases that contained information about the user of Flipboard and could have obtained copies of them.
Using a release Flipboard announced that they had been the victims of several hacks to their databases. Hackers have had access to Usernames, encrypted passwords, email addresses and digital identifiers that link the accounts to accounts of third parties (such as Google or Facebook).
To correct these errors Flipboard has reset all passwords of users in addition to having reinforced their systems to avoid possible future attacks. On the other hand, they have ensured that the passwords that have been stolen were encrypted with a method called salt hashing, and its decipherment involves great resources. On the other hand, they have notified the competent authorities about the attack to prevent more malicious access in the future.
