Galaxy S10: slow fingerprint sensor, laugh facial recognition

Galaxy S10+

Samsung's latest flagship, the Galaxy S10 +, is a terminal that combines excellent design with impressive hardware. The Korean brand has achieved a terminal with an almost full screen, yes, moving the central notch of most competitive models to one of the sides by means of a slit, which you may like more or less, but at least it is an original alternative that we must be grateful for in these times in which everyone seems only concerned with copying Apple.

However, to achieve this design and eliminate the rear fingerprint sensor, which is increasingly criticized, Samsung has chosen to integrate an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor below the screen. It is a technology that has been shown for a long time and that many do not understand why Apple does not adopt Face ID instead. Dispense with the facial recognition of the iPhone would help to eliminate the notch, but the first tests of the S10 + seem to demonstrate why Apple continues with its notch and Face ID.

Slow and inaccurate fingerprint sensor

The fingerprint sensor integrated under the screen of the new S10 + uses ultrasonic technology to recognize the user's fingerprint and unlock the terminal. It is a very specific place on the screen, so with the screen off you must know very well where to place your finger so that it recognizes it, although if the screen turns on it does show you an area where to place it. The problem is that it is slow, and as we can see in the image above, taken from the review of The Verge, requires several attempts until the terminal is unlocked. It is quite reminiscent of the first generation of Touch ID, which needed a certain time before being able to recognize the finger that you had placed on the fingerprint sensor. In the second generation of the Touch ID this improved and the recognition is practically instantaneous.

If you want good facial recognition, you need a notch

The notch is not on the iPhone by Apple's whim, quite the opposite. It is a facial recognition technology that requires several cameras and sensors that are impossible to hide under the screen. Despite the fact that countless competing models have copied the notch, they have done so for mere aesthetic reasons, since no brand has achieved facial recognition that is not even close to Apple's. Samsung offers facial recognition in its S10 +, but as we can see in the image, a video on your iPhone screen can unlock the S10 +.

Probably in a few years we will have the technology that allows a phone that is 100% screen, but today, if we want a fast, reliable, and safe security system, it seems that the alternatives offered by manufacturers to Apple's facial recognition and its notch are still far from achieving it. I personally keep my notch and my Face ID seen what I've seen. If you want to see the complete review of The Verge, below you have the video from which I have taken these images.

In the end everything comes out. I already knew (and I don't want to be a smartass) that something similar was going to happen. Fingerprint sensor under the screen !!!! Oohh! Facial recognition !! Oooh! When Apple does not remove the notch for something it will be. Prioritize safety and effectiveness over aesthetics. When it comes to facial recognition, Appel is way ahead of its competitors. And if one day it puts fingerprint recognition under the screen or reduces the notch, it will be without removing an iota of security.

Here the only laughing matter is the prices of the iPhone (and therefore its sales). And I already tell you that if many people were not super used to IOS, and thinking that using Android is something like "programming in linux or those geek things" Apple was again biting the dust as a company, you just have to see the bump that have been given in their sales…. The reality is that they continue to live on the income that Steve Jobs left with his first iPhone, which was wonderful and there was nothing on the market that came close (from iPhone 5 on everything was equal). Right now any Chinese manufacturer has more innovation than Apple and on top of that they arrive 1 year earlier, and in the end Apple needs them for its internal components… .. Now everyone removes the notch because it is out of fashion and because it really is an aberration to design. I have many more acquaintances with Xiaomis and Huaweis than with iPhones, and this a few years ago was unthinkable. Not to mention the new notebooks that are taking out that take away the hiccups and the MacBooks and their prices are also laughable.

And you put this comment in an article about a phone that costs the same as an iPhone and a manufacturer whose sales have fallen more than Apple's ...

    Apple is falling behind ...

Totally agree with you Hummer, just check the specifications of the VIVO NEX DUAL SCREEN, a Chinese brand that gives 2 laps of advantage to the iPhone Xs, in any characteristic in which you compare them, including the price!
It only costs HALF of what an iPhone Xs costs

Two laps ahead of the Iphone Xs? It seems to me that you are a little wrong. And that Apple lives on the income of Steve Jobs? Please. Apart from the quality of its products, IOs is far superior to Android. Altogether, Apple has the best and most secure terminals.

Excellent phone the Samsung S10 as a whole, with all the cutting edge functions, especially the camera with ultra wide mode. I think that android has evolved to the level of iOS if we speak in general, but it is indisputable that the IOS has the great advantage of supports and updates for many more years than android (by layers and various brands of devices running with Android OS) and This allows you to use your iPhone for longer (fluently), and is made more important by the high prices of Premium phones from both Apple and SAMSUNG.
