Guide to control your iPhone connections abroad

Now that many of you are or are going on vacation, we want to show you the different options for control your iPhone connections abroad and not find surprises on the bill.

  • Disable 3G: In the menu Settings-General-Network, we can deactivate the 3G Network and the new tab of iOS 4 «Data Cellphones«. By deactivating these options we will avoid data consumption, and we can always connect to a network WiFi. As well we can use SBSettings.
  • Roaming of data: Within Settings-General-Red, we have this option, that the iPhone itself warns us “When you are abroad, turn off the roaming data to avoid significant additional charges when sending MMS or using email, Internet or other data services". This option should work also.
  • Change data in Mobile data network: For me this is the infallible option, you go to the mobile data settings and change the name of your access point.

I hope it serves you and happy holidays.

Something to keep in mind: I think that even disabling data roaming, the push is still working and wasting data. I say this from my own experience, he is making small connections that came out for about 3 or 4 euros in just a few days. Solution: disable push notifications.

Greetings, and I hope this helps

What's the point of disabling 3G? With companies like Yoigo (yes, friends, there are operators beyond Movodarange) you can only speak if you use 3G in countries like Holland since the associated operator there only provides 3G service.

It could happen that you were in an area with an operator that gave you a magnificent 3G coverage but when deactivating it you would take another NO-3G with less signal ... and that is the last thing I would do if I had an Iphone 4 !!! 😉

on my iphone 3g with os 4.0.1 in that same window with the movistar card (it's a free iphone) I get "mobile data" and "mobile data network" does not appear as you put here in the photo, and it's more I get like an on / off switch…. It is normal? i cant edit the network data on iphone?

    @satgi
put the card of another operator, connect it to iTunes
and the network settings of the new operator will be added.
Then it will appear to you.
    Hello!

What's the point of disabling 3G? (then it connects by GPRS or EDGE and would consume data)

What's the point of changing the APN? not everyone can (those who use official operators cannot edit the APN, and also ..

already put .. add another option "remove the SIM card when you are roaming".
sure, very sure, that this way it will not consume anything.

Look, turning off the "data roaming" option is more than enough. I often travel to different countries in the world, almost every month, and I have never paid anything. (I go with 2 iphones, one with the Spanish sim and the roaming option disabled and another free with the local sim with data plan).

What if you want to use your iPhone as usual without costing you so much money? I usually buy a prepaid sim in the destination country and activate a data package for it. There is even a help wiki for this.

Go abroad with an iPhone and not have a connection like at home, because what do you want me to tell you, take a normal phone and you will not have surprises, I preferred since I travel a lot, buy a free one and I am changing the SIMs
