How to enable real-time headphone level measurement in iOS 14

We already know that for Apple health is something that should be invested more. In fact, all devices that work with iOS and iPadOS 14, in addition to watchOS 7, include functions and premises that allow to improve people's health. In the last version, in iOS 13, Apple included a headphone audio level analysis, that allowed us to see an average of the decibels at which we had reproduced content on our devices. However, in iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 that function goes further and integrates a live audio level analysis from the Control Center, to know in real time what are the decibels that are being reproduced in our headphones.

Activate real-time measurement of the sound of your headphones in iOS 14

Represents the audio volume of your headphones measured in decibels A (dBA). It can help you understand how long you are exposed to high sound levels, a fact that can affect your hearing.

Health authorities and the scientific community agree that repeated sounds at high intensity causes damage to the auditory complex, producing irreversible damage. That is why it is important to know what intensities we are exposing ourselves to in order to take action or, if we are not aware, go to the doctor to resolve our doubts.

In iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 it is included real-time measurement of the sound level of our headphones. Apple ensures that the best headphones are AirPods and AirPods Pro, but there are also many others that support this function. To activate it we just have to follow the following steps:

  • Go to Settings and control center
  • Add the «Hearing» function to your control center

An ear icon will immediately appear in the place where we have positioned the function. The option it will remain inactive until we connect headphones. The moment we start playback with compatible headphones, we can return to the control center to see how the appearance of the function is changing.

If we press for a few seconds on the ear icon, the entire function will be displayed. We see a decibel scale that goes from 20 to 110. In real time we see how the scale moves around the intensity values in which we are reproducing content on the headphones. When we exceed 80 the color of the function turns yellow and we are warned that it is a high intensity and that we be careful.

On another occasion we will talk about another function that we can activate just below the one we have discussed. Under the name of «Listen live». It allows the user to reproduce what is heard outside in an amplified way thanks to the microphones of the AirPods.
