How to add a custom ringtone in iOS 9

tones-ios-9

Something that interests many smartphone owners is being able to put custom tones. A question that you ask us often is how to add custom ringtone in iOS 9. The quick and a bit funny answer would be "the same as in iOS 8", but it is not the answer we want to give you, so we will teach you four different methods so that you can set what you like the most as a ringtone. Although I notice that many of those tones will not be as good as you expect, but it is also true that there are others that are worth it. In this guide we will propose four different ways to create ringtones for your iPhone.

How to add a custom ringtone in iOS 9

With iTunes

I start with this method because it seems to me the simplest and it is valid for all of us who can install iTunes, which are OS X and Windows users.

  1. We choose a song from iTunes.
  2. We do cmd + io right click on the song and then on information.
  3. Let's go to the tab Options.
  4. We indicate the start and end point. At most put 40s, although I would put something less.
  5. We played on Accept.
  6. We again do cmd + io right click, but this time we choose Create AAC version. We will see how we duplicate the song, but the new one will have the time that we have configured in step 3.
  7. We drag the new song to desktop.
  8. Le we change the extension from m4a to m4r.
  9. We do double click on the new file and it will put it directly in the Tones section of iTunes.
  10. Finally, logically, we will synchronize with our iPhone.

The main problem that I see with this system is that it is not possible to add fade in or out, something that allows a tone to be better in certain occasions.

With GarageBand

This is by far my preferred method. I have been "playing" with this type of program for a long time and for me it is the simplest. Also, since GarageBand is an entire audio recording and editing program, we can add the effect we want, although the best thing is that we only add fade-ins and fade-outs to it.

Before explaining the long process that I usually use, I wanted to tell you that there is a second way (which for many would be the first) to create a tone with GarageBand and it is much simpler, but I don't like it. Yes instead of choosing Empty Project we choose Tone in step 2, we can create it much faster. We will only have to drag the wave (step 5) to the beginning of everything, click on Share and select "Song to iTunes ...". GarageBand will automatically trim the song to be under 40 seconds.

What I usually do is the following:

  1. We open GarageBand.
  2. We create a new Empty project.
  3. We choose Record via microphone or online input.
  4. We click on Create.
  5. We drag the audio inside the window GarageBand and we move the wave to the beginning of everything.
  6. We edit the audio. To do this, we click on the wave twice to see the editor at the bottom.
  7. If what we want is to delete what we don't want, in the channel at the bottom, we click while moving the cursor to select a piece to delete (we delete it with cmd + X). What I do is eliminate a small piece that is after the end that I want for my tone. Once I have eliminated that piece of the wave, in the upper window I can already eliminate the rest with the delete button.
  8. Then we can create a fade-in and fade-out. To do this we will touch where you see in the image, which will allow us to see the volume line. Then I recommend making two points: one where we want the fade to begin and another at the end, as you can see in the image.
  9. At the end of the whole the marker at the end of the song is very hidden. Must drag that rebel triangle to the end of what we have edited.
  10. The next thing is to go to Share and select "Ringtone to iTunes ...". ITunes will automatically open and the tone will begin to play.
  11. Now we only have to rename it (if we want) in iTunes and synchronize the tone with our iPhone.

With Audiko

Just as it says Felipe in the comments, there is also a website to create custom tones. I imagine there will be more, but I have tried it and it seems simple and fast to use. The web is Audiko and also has an application in the App Store, but you have to share the tone with iTunes and then return it to the iPhone. If you have to use the computer, it is better to do it directly from the web. To create a tone with Audiko web you have to do the following:

  1. Let's go to the page http://es.audiko.net
  2. We click on Load.
  3. We choose the song from which we want to extract the tone.
  4. When I'm done loading, we move from the lower corners to choose the portion we want, remembering that they have to be less than 40 seconds.
  5. We indicate, if we wish, fade in and out.
  6. We click on "Create ringtone"(That's what I read, I don't know if it's a mistake from me or from the web).
  7. Then we select iPhone.
  8. We click on Dload.
  9. Finally, as always, we synchronize the tone with the iPhone via iTunes.

With programs from the App Store

It is something that personally I have never done nor do I think I will ever do with the GarageBand system, but I comment on it as an option. We just have to search for "ringtones", "Ringtone maker", "Create tones" and similar things in the App Store and you will see tons of applications for it. There are many free, most of them, but with limitations and few functions, almost all of them. As I said, I mention it as an option, but most likely we will use iTunes if we have an iPhone, so I don't think this is your preferred option. I leave you the two most used.

Here is a list of the tones that I have made for myself and some that have been requested:

How to change the ringtone of WhatsApp or Facebook

For Cchange the tone of the Wharsapp, You must go to Settings of the WhatsApp itself, notifications New message or group message, there you change the tone.

The one of Facebook It can be changed within the iOS settings, there you will have the option to modify the tone of the notifications of different applications.

Excellent tutorial, very well explained step by step. I will try with Garage, since until now I did it with iTunes as you explain in the first way.

Anyway I still find it very sad that Apple does not allow it "natively".

Pablo, I think you are the best writer by far and the most objective, keep it up, please.

    A greeting!

If you are jailbreak users you have it much easier ... with unlimtones.
You can also download it with unlimtones on an iPhone with jailbreak and transfer them to the PC with programs such as itools and there are those you synchronize with iTunes and those tones are valid for any iPhone without jailbreak ...
Buaaaa often tostón and that he did not explain to me as I wanted.

I just bought an IPhone SE and with those steps it is NOT possible. The options that appear in the displayed windows are not those ... ...
And the list of tones being empty, I do not have the option to synchronize nor can I copy and paste the ringtone after I cut it and I manage to change the extension to rm4

The easiest thing is with the Twistedwave program, it can even open mp4 videos as audio and convert it to various types of audio format,

If it works but to create version acc is not with the right button, you have to select song and then click on file (top left) and in the drop-down select convert and then aac. Create a file with the new selected duration and same song name, drag it to the desktop, rename extension (F2) (it asks you to confirm that you want to change the extension, press accept) and that's it. Connect iPhone and synchronize tones (choose the folder where the file is located. February 2016
