Humidity sensors are not 100% reliable

3M1.png

Actually it is something that we all suspected, but some tests confirm it. Moisture sensors are pieces that we can find in many electronic products, including the iPhone, which change color when submerged in water. This helps companies to know the possible reason why a product has damaged, and in case it is due to water, the guarantee is rejected. At least in the case of Apple.

But this is not 100% reliable and in fact has been a source of controversy, since several users have shown their anger when the warranty was rejected by Apple while they assure that they had not wet the phone. In tests carried out by 3M, manufacturer of the 3M 5557 sensors (the ones that the iPhone carries), it is claimed that these sensors, exposed for 7 days in an environment with 95% humidity, go from white to pink with a simple drop, without the need to submerge the device. This is important because in conditions where condensation can occur (for example in the bathroom while showering) it may be the case that the sensor turns red.

Will Apple pronounce itself? Probably not.

Hello, in the image you post, it clearly says that:
    1: Moisture resistance
    control time: 0 Days
    White color
    2: control time: 0 days
sensor with 1 drop of water for 1 minute where indicated by the arrow
    pink colour
    3: 7 days, 55 degrees C, 95% ambient humidity
    White color
    4: 7 days, 55 degrees C, 95% ambient humidity
sensor with 1 drop of water for 1 minute where indicated by the arrow
    pink colour

What I don't understand is how you say “In tests carried out by the manufacturer itself, it is shown how after 7 days exposed to an environment with 95% humidity in the air, the sensor turns pink without having had direct contact with water. . "
When it clearly says that if there was water ... you have been confused!

What I mean is that 3M in the test agrees with Apple, that does not mean that it is right ...

thanks for the correction. I have followed the sources more thoroughly and have changed the post. The problem comes from the fact that with a simple drop by condensation the guarantee can be withdrawn. something that does not influence the iPhone but it spoils the guarantee against future failures unrelated to this issue.

xbeiro, as you know, and if you did not know, I will say it now, I work in an official technical service. The warranty (at least in the case of Nokia and Sony Ericsson) excludes terminals that have these sensors in pink. This is simple, either by condensation or by immersion we can say that the phone has been used incorrectly by the customer. Also, if you read the iphone warranty limitations, point (d) says: «This warranty does not apply to: (…) any damage caused by accident, misuse, improper use or improper application, floods, fire, earthquake or any other external cause. "
Well, the relative humidity of the environment is an external cause that voids the iPhone warranty, it is simply not manufactured to work in those humidity ranges and if we subject them to them we lose the guarantee. It is a huge bitch but it is like that, and when we buy any device we submit to the express warranty limitations that the manufacturer communicates to us, which by the way are revised and legally approved texts.

I am a technician of an Apple reseller, not of iPhones because those are repaired in Holland, but every day I receive Macbooks or iMacs and they all have the same sensors, they are not so sensitive, but if, for example, you leave the iPhone in the car with it air conditioner near the air outlet, a drop of water may form on the headphone jack and if that drop touches the sensor, it turns red.
Our order is if the sensor is like image 1 or 3 Accept it, but if it is like 2 or 4, the repair is not accepted under warranty.
The problem is that if a gadget has a red sensor, you cannot RMA apple, therefore you cannot accept the warranty.
That it is an unreliable method, it may be, but less reliable is the word of the people, therefore they have to do something.

Yes, I agree that companies have to put some system in place, but I also understand the anger of someone who happens to him about the air conditioning or the shower. That's where the controversy comes from 😉

What happens is that you can really damage an iPhone if you put it with you in the bathroom while you shower or if you leave it in the kitchen while you cook, or even with the condensation of the air conditioning. For me there is no controversy, if we do not want to lose the guarantee we simply have to be careful.

Myself, I sent the phone to the sat due to a break in the casing, they sent me a new one, due to a crack in the screen I wanted to send it back a second time after a month or so, and they return it to me with the sensor item on the part of the red charger. Imagine my anger when in life it has gotten wet and is spotless, perfect, after a short month. The point is that I can't prove if it came like this or it may have turned red because of carrying it in my pants pocket making efforts that made me sweat and that's why it changed color. But I bet I don't touch water in my life ... let's go with how well I take care of my appliances.
It seems to me a serious fault not to solve such a problem, and to put less sensitive sensors.

    Good,

I have had that same problem with Apple. I sent my cell phone because the vibration did not work and they told me that the profit did not cover it and I had to pay 171 euros for the repair.
My surprise was to know in detail the subject of these sensors and investigate and check on my iphone that these sensors were neither red nor pink or anything, except for the battery and perhaps a little for the charging input that I cannot see completely .
after a while my iphone works fine. It has vibration and I have not paid a euro.
It will be my conspiracy or paranoia, but being an iPhone 8gib that is no longer officially "sold" it gives me a lot to think about about the warranty, the pink control devices and Apple / Movistar.
    regards

My question is for the two of the technical service ???
What humidity range does the iphome support ???? Does it put it somewhere ???
You can use an iPhone on a rainy or foggy day or with a lot of heat
If not, I would just know according to what the manufacturer tells you between what temperature the phone can be used so as not to lose the warranty
Because let's remember that it is a mobile phone ¨¨mobile¨¨¨¨ you use it on the street
