Kidizoom DX2 by VTech, the smart watch for children

Today we analyze a very special device: a smart watch for children. The Kidizoom DX2 from VTech is fun, it helps children learn and also parents can be very calm with it.

This smart watch is not from Apple, it does not even connect with our iPhone, but it is specifically designed for the little ones in the house. VTech has achieved a robust device, great fun for the little ones in the house, which will also teach them things like knowing the time in analogue and will encourage them to increase their physical activity, and that I was very pleasantly surprised in its operation, being very intuitive and with a really good tactile response from the screen.

Specifications

The smartwatch is made of plastic, very light (barely 100 grams) and much less delicate than metal or glass, so it is much more suitable for a child to wear. It has a touch screen with a size of 1,44 inches in full color, and it works with an integrated battery (not replaceable) that is recharged by means of a microUSB connector located on the side and the cable that is incorporated in the box. Its battery has an autonomy that will vary depending on the time of use, ranging from a couple of days if the use is very intensive, to a week with more habitual use. A switch on the back of the watch allows it to be turned off completely for long periods of non-use.

It has two cameras, one located on the front, to take selfies, and another on the front. It allows the capture of photos with resolution 640 × 480 and videos of up to 60 seconds in length with resolution 320 × 240. Thanks to the 256MB of internal memory, everything you capture will be stored in the clock itself, with the possibility of downloading it to the computer via the microUSB cable. The storage capacity is about 1500 photos and 10 minutes of video at full resolution.

It has a button on the side for menu navigation, and another on the opposite side for capturing photos and videos. On that same side it has the microUSB connector, with a rubber cover that prevents the entry of dust and other dirt. The VTech DX2 is not waterproof, it does withstand splashes, but it should not be immersed in water or put under a tap. It is the only "but" that I can put on this watch, which, due to its specifications and build quality, seems perfect for the little ones in the house.

It has conventional straps to grip the wrist. The strap is sized for smaller wrists, and has enough adjustment holes so that up to 10-12 years can use it without problems. It is a strap with a very soft touch, very comfortable to wear, to which its lightness also contributes. The buckle closure mechanism is secure and prevents accidental drops or losses.

Games, tools and learning

The watch does not require hardly any configuration to be able to start using it. Once the date and time have been indicated, all its content can be used. The games are adapted to be used with a very simple touch interface, ranging from puzzles to mazes. The little ones will not need more than a few seconds to know how they work, and they are very short games that with the help of the sounds they emit will allow them to have a fun time. There are also educational games such as the one that helps children know the hours with the hand clock.

It even has augmented reality games, which makes the child have to move so that monsters appear on the screen in the real world, thanks to the front camera, which they must destroy with a sight. The more you move the more monsters will appear. The promotion of physical activity is an important feature within the content of the Kidizoom DX2, with many applications that encourage the child to jump, run, walk ... to achieve their goals, thanks to the movement analysis performed by the watch through its integrated accelerometer.

Of course the watch is a watch, and as such the dials are an important part. You have several dials that you can easily change, as well as toggle between analog and digital clock, as well as other typical smart watch tools, such as the alarm, stopwatch, calendar, timer, etc. All this with a very intuitive interface that children handle perfectly.

The cameras are the big star of this smartwatch. Children will be able to capture selfies or photos of their friends or their surroundings, and modify them with fun objects and frames, which can then be downloaded to the computer or used as wallpaper for the clock face. It is one of the funniest activities that attracts the little ones the most with this VTech watch. Also videos or even voice notes, which can then be played from the device itself.

If all this content was not enough, from the VTech website you can download the Explor @ park application (link) for both Windows and Mac, with which in addition to downloading updates for our watch you can download countless games, themes and other content completely free of charge and install them on the watch so that its content is different. They are small applications and files that hardly take up space, so you will have no problem downloading all the content you want. To download photos and videos to your computer, you just have to connect it and it will be detected as an external storage from which you can drag the content to your hard drive, or even delete it.

No worries for parents

One of the most important aspects of the watch is that all its content is designed for the little ones in the house, and there is no possibility of accessing any other inappropriate content. The watch lacks any type of connectivity, neither WiFi nor Bluetooth, so there is no risk of the child downloading inappropriate things, or spending money without our supervision. It is also impossible for someone to track the watch. We can be very calm that our little one uses it, something very important when we talk about such young children.

It does not have the most important thing for parents: Call and locate, from what I read, it is nothing more than an awkward mini game console.
