Lithium and silicon batteries could offer 20-40% more charge

The battery of all electronic devices, today they continue to offer the same capacity and duration problems as 10 years ago, being one of the components that has barely evolved. But it seems that it could change soon if the investigations that a company related to Apple is doing, come to see the light.

If they finally see the light, it is likely that Apple was among the first manufacturers to implement the new lithium and silicon batteries, batteries that would offer us between 20 and 4% more capacity, which would thus allow them to extend their duration, without having to resort only to the management carried out by the device software.

The lack of innovation that we have seen in recent years, It has slowed down the progress not only of electronic devices, especially smartphones, but also of electric vehicles. Each battery has a positively charged cathode and a negatively charged anode. In today's lithium batteries, the anode is made of graphite, which offers a very long life. Using silicon instead would allow the battery to store more energy. However, anodes made of this material wear out faster, being its main drawback.

The company that is researching these new batteries and that has ties to Apple is called Sila Nanotechnologies, a company that is developing silicon anodes with enough graphite so that the service life is much longer. But Nila Nanotechnologies is not the only company that is developing this type of technology. Rival Enevate says it is also working on a battery that will improve its storage capacity by 30%.

Replace current graphene anodes with one made of graphene-coated silicon, it would not mean a drastic change in production, so if this new type of battery finally comes to light, it is likely that we will not have to wait long to be able to enjoy a longer duration on our mobile devices.
