Mathpix, solve equations with your iPhone's camera

Mathpix

This question is for those who watch The Big Bang Theory: do you remember that episode in which the 4 protagonists consider creating an application? For those who have not seen that episode, Sheldon, Leonard, Rajesh and Howard are considering getting rich by launching a smartphone application. The idea they have is to create an application that is capable of read and solve any mathematical equation. Well that application is available and its name is Mathpix.

How Mathpix works couldn't be simpler: all we have to do is do a photo to an equation and the application will do the rest. If you want to try it, you can do it by taking a photo of the following text (yes, enlarging the image of the browser): 6 + x = 9 Does it give you 3? But, as you can see in the screenshots of the App Store, this application does not solve only simple equations (if not, it would not be necessary), but it can solve some much more complex ones.

Mathpix will solve the equations for you

The interface is very reminiscent of the UI of the different applications we use to scan documents. In the same way as with this type of application, for Mathpix to be able to solve an equation we will have to put only the formula / equation in the box. If something else enters, however little it may be, the application will try to read the extra symbols and give us a wrong result. But if we do it correctly, the reading and the result will take just a few seconds.

Mathpix was imagined by the Stanford PhD student Nico Jimenez, who was advised by the graduate of the same university Paul Ferrell. The other developers of the application they are high school students Michael Lee and August Trollbäck. The result is impressive for an application that claims to be the first to visually recognize and solve handwritten math problems. And the best thing is that, unlike the protagonists of the aforementioned series, this application is free. If you've already tried it, what do you think?
