Microsoft has just announced via its support page that it has decided Throw in the towel in the streaming music industry and your Groove Music service will shut down, a service renamed with this inconspicuous name in 2015 when Xbox Music closed. On December 31, the service and everything related to it will stop working permanently.
Obviously, Microsoft has wanted to take advantage of the few users that today enjoy the service and not to leave them stranded, has reached an agreement with Spotify to move both the playlists and the music that they have acquired so far.
Since yesterday, October 2, the company no longer allows anyone to sign up for the service and all those who have an annual fee and want to unsubscribe early they will receive the corresponding refund or a card to spend on Microsoft products. After the closure of Groove Music, worldwide, there are only four options: Spotify, current king of streaming music with just over 60 million users (to which we must add those of Groove Music), Apple Music with 30 million (as announced a few days), Google Play Music and Tidal.
Both from Tidal and Google the number of users who could have or have both platforms have never been announced, so we cannot get an idea of what position they occupy in the market. Google, even if its music service does not work as well as it would like, it cannot close the service as it would take away the offer of multimedia services it offers. In a few days, Microsoft will email all Groove Music subscribers when they can start migrating their playlists and libraries to the Swedish music streaming service.
