Mirasol, a new display technology developed by Qualcomm

Qualcomm has demonstrated its new patent in relation to technologies for the manufacture of screens. Her name is mirasol and it differs a lot from what we are used to seeing in OLED or LCD panels from those that many of today's smartphones mount.

Mirasol technology stands out for its huge pixel density per inch, achieving a definition never seen before on a screen of only 5,1 inches. While smartphones with FULL HD resolution are achieving screen densities around 440ppi (the iPhone 5 / 4S / 4 has 326ppi), the Mirasol screen offers 577ppi, that is, a resolution of 2560 × 1440 pixels.

In return, the colors shown in the Mirasol panel are not as vivid such as those offered by OLED / LCD panels, being duller and also affecting the quality of blacks and whites that also cannot match those offered by an electronic ink screen.

In exchange for this inconvenience, the Mirasol screens promise six times greater energy efficiency than current panels. Taking into account that the display is the component that consumes the most of the overall autonomy of a portable device, we are talking about a very considerable improvement in battery life.

There is still a long way to go until the first panels based on Mirasol technology reach devices for mass consumption. There is talk that the tests of this technology will be extended, at least, a couple of years more.

Would you sacrifice liveliness in the image in exchange for a resolution and autonomy much greater than the current one?

Why do I want a screen with more resolution than my 23 ″ monitor that already looks perfect? And in which I'm watching that demo video and I say uiii how good it looks! Wait, I'm seeing it on a screen from 5 years ago!

How good! What we save on battery due to technology will be eaten by the processor to move that amount of pixels.

    Fail!
