Notch or no notch?

iPhone X notch

Since the introduction of the iPhone X there have been two great conversations around it: The Face ID (and the inseparable elimination of Touch ID) and the "notch", or tab, or overhang, or whatever you want to call it.

It does not matter if the opinions are positive or negative, in reality, that does not matter to the competition. What the competition has to decide is to copy it or not to copy it, making the most of your decision.

Before the Mobile World Congress that is taking place, we saw many manufacturers copy the notch. Many times without a real function, or even copy it using software. Something that would be like covering a crack in the wall with a television, and that the television is there only to reproduce a wall without a crack.

At MWC we are seeing many more copies, sometimes blatant. But we also see the opposite with Samsung. It is clear that Samsung cannot play to copy Apple -at least not in everything- with your flagship phone each year. It would be like creating an imitation Hermès Birkin bag, and selling it for over $ 10,000, too. Better to buy the original Hermès.

For this reason, Samsung has to play another game, it has to bet on something differential and exploit it as it suits him best. I admit it Samsung's Galaxy S range is spectacular. The Galaxy S8, along with the Nexus 6P and the black iPhone 5, are some of the prettiest phones I've ever seen.

We cannot say less about the Galaxy S9. It maintains its screen with rounded edges, which although not very functional, I like them, and almost no edge on the top or bottom. The differential touch of the Galaxy S9 and Samsung is this screen, the Infinity Display.

Of course, Samsung could not present this without mentioning that it has no "notch". I said, if you copy Apple, that's your game. If you do not copy what it does, it is better to say that you have not done it and explain why (even if it is a lie).

Samsung could have made a "notch", what it has not been able to do is a Face ID that allows Samsung to do without the fingerprint reader. Which Samsung has highlighted as one of the favorite methods to unlock your phone. A favorite of the many methods you have as they don't know which one to focus on.

Possibly the S10 has a "Face ID" that may be the only unlocking method, and we will see how they excuse it. Until then, I leave you the video of the presentation in which they release more than one punch to the iPhone X.

So "notch" or not "notch"? My answer is that, for Apple, if "notch". For many reasons. The first is the least obvious but actually the most important of all: The silhouette of the iPhone. To be able to look at an iPhone from afar and say that it is an iPhone because of that “notch”. This is called branding, and Apple takes good care of it.

If not, think now how many times have you distinguished a turned off iPhone as an iPhone so far, well looking at the circular Home button. Many times the covers are so thick and so bulky that they make it difficult to differentiate which phone is inside, but the Home button was always there to say: “I am an iPhone”. Now we have the "notch". In a world where phones are all glass ahead, the only way to differentiate it is with something that always stands out on the screen, and they have succeeded.

The rest of the reasons for having a "notch" are, rather, reasons to say that "it doesn't matter what it is". The most real example of opinion of the iPhone X and its "notch" is my mother. They gave him an iPhone X for Christmas. He loves it. We set up Face ID in the first few minutes and you have the hang of it. It does not fail him. He also understood at the moment the new gestures, which to this day, come out completely natural (even on the iPad, where they do not work).

Y the "notch" is something that has given absolutely the same. He has not asked what it is, he has not asked why it is there, he has not said anything. Or put another way, it is indifferent. This is an opinion that we have heard from many users of the iPhone X: "After 5 minutes you forget that it is there." And it is true.

There are no reasons to try to eliminate the "notch" in future models, it is something that does not bother. However, it is something that adds a lot of brand image, a lot of conversations, a lot of publicity. And, you know, there is no bad publicity.

I can hardly imagine someone who stop buying the iPhone X in favor of a Samsung Galaxy S9 because of the "notch". And this, in the end, is what matters.

They won't copy the notch and brag about it. But their presentations are ridiculous copies of the keynote ... and the one who speaks calmly could retire from the stage. nondescript and without any spark.

They still have a long way to go to start seeing Apple's shadow

I totally agree with the article, I also prefer the night and have the maximum screen than having black bands, it is something that does not bother nor do I know what it is, the more screen the better, before they said that it had many iphone frames and now they complain that it has few , It will be a matter of putting a button and that the cameras and sensors come out from inside the mobile and well even so they will already look for something to say, that the button does not like the way, really the night is something distinctive and the only way to have the maximum possible screen.

From my point of view, giving an iPhone X to a mother is wasting money, xk so that she learns to use WhatsApp and take 4 photos for that I buy her an android for € 150, she is not going to use it as can give a geek.

So you prefer it to have a notch so that people know you have an iPhone, otherwise people would think it is any other phone. At least you are sincere and in a way you admit that you have an iPhone because of posture, not because it is a better phone.

The truth is that he was talking at the company level, whether or not they should make mobile phones with "notch" and how Apple has taken advantage of something controversial. The only thing I have said at the user level, on several occasions, is that it does not matter because you end up not seeing it or paying attention to it.

It seems to me that what you say has little logic, if I buy a Ferrari I want it to be known that I am in a Ferrari I have not seen any Ferrari with panda camouflage (very good car the panda by the way, facial to repair, without problems and works like the best), on mobile phones it is not because it is an iPhone, if I like Samsung and I buy the last one I like to see that it is the last of what I like, then the purists who for whatsapp and call with a mobile xxxxx Okay, yes, but I can because my economy allows it, and I like technology and mobile phones because it is logical that I buy what I like, and it is true that looking at the screen you know that it is an iPhone X and for The brand is something distinctive, something that for any other brand it would be good for its mobile phone to stand out from the rest, it is absurd to question anyone about what they like or what their money is spent on, everyone who buys what they like the most, everyone mobiles have good and bad things and they have differences, what problem is there Let's choose the one we like, I don't care about iPhone, Samsung, Xiaomi, etc…. that each one buy what they want and for what they want, let's not put any qualifiers for that.

That nose, it is horrible wherever you look, it even gives me a headache to always be aware of the little nose of the noses worth the redundancy, that's why I bought the iphone 8 plus 256gb, I knew that I would always be thinking about the Black band, the photos in the games in the apps, and I could not stand it, also thanks to the two stripes at the top and bottom of the iphone 8 you can catch much better when playing, I tried the iphone x and it looked like a fish slippery.
