Nimbus from SteelSeries. Review of the MFi controller offered by Apple next to Apple TV 4

steelseries-nimbus

When we buy an Apple TV in the online store we see that they offer us several accessories that would go well with our new set-top box. Among them is the MFi remote SteelSeries nimbus, a controller compatible with iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV 4. With this offer it seems that Apple is telling us that the future of video games involves a device that we will have in our living room and that device could be the Apple TV Fourth generation. How could it not be otherwise, in Actualidad iPhone We have put our paws on one of these controllers who, it must be said, has left a very good taste in our mouths. Here you have our review.

What devices is the Steelseries Nimbus compatible with?

The Nimbus is compatible with:

  • Apple TV 4.
  • iPhone 5 or later.
  • iPad Pro.
  • 4th generation iPad or later.
  • iPad mini 2 or later.
  • iPod touch 4th generation or later.

  • MFi SteelSeries Nimbus Controller.
  • Quick Start Guide.

It does NOT include the Lightning cable needed to charge the controller when it runs out of battery.

Integrated

Admittedly, the design is a bit strange, says someone who has used the PlayStation Dualshock for decades. What is most striking are the two side supports, but it is something that, once we take it, comes in handy. The Dualshock has very little support there and, if we have a slightly large hand, it is "flying" without support most of the time. As for the buttons, it has the same as those of any console control today:

  • Directional crosshead. View one, view all. The one on the Nimbus just feels a little different, no better, no worse. It is a matter of getting used to, although it is not that it is used much in most modern games.
  • Four action buttons (A, B, Y and X). They are closer together than in other commands, something that for many will be good but I think it is a mistake. I think it is also a matter of getting used to, but those of us with slightly large fingers will surely press the button that we do not want to press more than once.
  • L1, L2, R1 and R2. In the case of the "2", we have gradual triggers. They seem comfortable to me, but I haven't been able to use them in any game yet. We will have to wait and try it in a Shooter.
  • Analog sticks. They have the upper part inwards, which can come in handy so that our fingers do not slip. The bad thing is that they are totally smooth in those gaps and what we gain on the one hand we can lose on the other. If we do a little (very little) pressure, it seems to hold up well.
  • Menu button, power button and Bluetooth button (in case it is necessary to pair it).

Materials

The Nimbus is built of good materials; It is not a toy controller. He is a command gentleman. The only thing that doesn't quite convince me is the brightness of some parts. But hey, we don't have to be looking at the controller, if not at the screen. The buttons, above all the L and R, they seem much better to me than those of other controls and I think the same of the analog ones, although they seem a bit small to me.

Sensations

The command in general gives more feeling of quality than official PlayStation controllers, but this can be a subjective feeling. From the moment we take it, we are pleasantly surprised in that sense, although then there are things that can make us feel strange. I'm talking about the main buttons, the crosshead and the analog buttons, something that I think is normal every time we change the knob. If we just take it and put our hands in position to play, we notice that it is a robust knob It is worth as much as any other famous console controller, although the quality is paid.

Button sensitivity

The Nimbus, as I said earlier, is a command lord. That includes the sensitivity of the buttons. I have tried playing classic consoles (emulated on the Mac) and Geometry Wars 3, for example, and the analog ones work quite sensitively. The problem I see is that they are a bit hard, so if we want to make a gradual movement we will have to get used to the command. For everything else, perfect.

Autonomy

Steelseries promises that the Nimbus will have a autonomy of more than 40 hours (we'll see). That's roughly three times the range of the Dualshock 4, which is said soon. We could spend almost two days in a row playing without having to charge the Nimbus. To charge it is done with a Lightning cable, which does not come in the box but we can use the one from any iPhone 5 or later or iPad 4 or later.

Nimbus app for iOS

There is an application in the App Store to accompany our Nimbus. The application helps us to update the firmware of the Nimbus, as a tutorial and to know what games are available in the Apple Store that support MFi controls, which is very good, of course.

Price

We can buy a SteelSeries Nimbus from an Apple Store (here the website) for a price of 59,95€. It is more or less the price for which we can buy other famous console controllers, but I think it is a bit high to use it on iOS and Mac devices. I do not deny that in the future it will have more games available and that its price will be fair, But right now it seems a bit expensive to me.

I'm sorry to tell you that you have no idea what you're talking about. Stop comparing this controller with the Playstation when it is a clear copy of the Xbox one, which by the way is the best controller to play.

The design will be strange for the author, who will never have taken one of X360 or XOne, because there is plagiarism in the design….
